Carlisle press went up in smoke today, HELP needed

My Carlisle press motor decided to die today. I was just finishing up a billet and the motor started smoking:grumpy:.

I'd like to upgrade the motor to a TEFC but have been unable to find a suitable replacement. All the 5HP TEFC motors I find have a different frame designation, not the R56HZ. I'm not well educated on motors but I do know how to wire them.

The specs on the motor are:
5HP
220 volt/ single phase
3450 RPM
Frame R56HZ
22.0 amps
Type CP
Code G

If anyone else has run into this same problem and swapped out their motor for a TEFC I'd appreciate the company and motor info.

Thanks for the help.

I'm not familiar with R56HZ
Offhand I'd say I wouldn't expect a 5Hp motor to fit in a 56 frame.

but all those letters are a standardized code by NEMA and you should be able to search for what they mean.

You can use this chart to understand the specs of different frame sizes for the motors you are looking at.

I'd pay attention to shaft diameter, shaft center height from the base and mounting holes.
I expect that for the right price, you can adapt most motors to fit.

Mike you might want to check and see if there is an electric motor repair shop around you close, might be cheaper to rebuild than buy new or they could help you find a replacement.

Hey Mike, the only 5hp motors I've seen with a 56 sized (5/8") shaft, are usually called "compressor motors" (for small compressors) and are almost exclusively ODP (open, drip proof) enclosures. I know a few guys running them on press builds, and yeah, I'm always concerned about them.

Usually in TEFC or TENV motors, once you start getting over 2hp, they start going to the frame configurations with larger shaft sizes, 145tz, 184tc, etc, etc, type frames.

Is your motor coupled with a lovejoy type connection to the pump? If so, you should be able to find an adapter, and use any shaft size necessary, if not, you should be able to adapt it. I think the reason many press builds use these motors is due to ubiquity or cost.. I've never understood why, since the motors shouldn't be starting under high load (which compressors do), in a forging press application.

Wanted to mention, I've had good luck just tack welding the frames of motors down to whatever I'm mounting on instead of bolting. Just 4 or 5 good spot tacks (develop a puddle, just don't move it), hold extremely well, and don't require any drilling. Pop it off if you ever need to in 5 minutes with an angle grinder.. I've moved one motor 3 times like that on my disc grinder.

Might save some aggravating free hand drilling in steel, or having to reroute hoses. If you're worried about heat, shield whatever is close by with some inswool.

I'd like to thank everyone for all their help online as well as the private messages and e-mails. This motor search has been very educational. This particular motor I'm trying to replace with the 56hz frame designation has two measurement that will save me a bunch of work. The first is the shaft height of 3 1/2" and the second is the shaft size of 7/8". The 7/8" shaft diameter is apparently what the "hz" refers to on the frame designation. Most 56 framed motors have a 5/8" shaft as Javand stated. I found motors that fit all my requirements with exception of the TEFC. I make a lot of dust in my shop and am certain the dust was the culprit in my motors death. So, the TEFC was what I had to have. I received a text from my buddy Bing this morning, at 5:30:eek:, mentioning Grizzly Industrial. They had the exact motor I was looking for with the exception of it being American made. I'm a huge fan of the Baldor and Leeson motors. Unfortunately these two companies don't make a motor that fits ALL my needs. I pulled the trigger on the Grizzly motor and hope it will last.

Thanks again for all the help.

Mike

Mike, Glad to help out. I know when my motor goes again, ( and I know it will ) Same issue as you with the dust. I will be going with the Grizzly as well. By the way doesn't everyone get up in the morning before 5:00AM ;) Heck i waited till 5:30 to send you the text.
