Carnivore as a utility knife?

I know the Carnivore is advertised as a combat knife. How well does it work in a utility role? Should I consider a Pioneer instead? I really use the knife for cutting open everything, not as a self defense weapon. Of course any knife is better than your finger nails! What makes the Carny a tactical knife and the Pioneer not a tactical knife?

One of the things that makes the Carnie stand out as a defensive knife is the handle. The knife is very secure in your hand. Almost no possibility of your hand slipping forward. It is even comfortable in reverse grip. I think the Carnie would make a fine utility knife, even though it was designed more for defensive purposes.

It does make a fine utility knife. I'm a LEO and the carnivour is my primary carry knife. As such it has to be capable of being employed as a defensive knife, but also has to be able to be used-and-abused as a general utility cutting implement. I have never had to stab anyone (yet), but if I can advise you that it is an excellent utility blade. Many of the features that make it acceptable for combat make it good for general use as well (handle ergonomics, blade geometry, that super-grippy g-10, etc etc etc).

"A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects." -Robert Heinlein

My first thought when I bought my Carnivoure from Pat Crawford two years ago."This should be the S.E.R.E. folder for this Century." I bought it for a utility knife. And have carried and used it almost every day since.

Thanks guys. I have agonized over whether to get a Carnivore. Since I use my knives for utility and not self defense, my priorities are going to be diferent than a LEO for example. I'm glad to hear that it makes a good utility knife. Thanks everyone.

Since I'm not schooled about knife combat nor inclined to really consider it, both my Carnivores were purchased with "utility" in mind.
I also have two Pioneer I's. They are excellent utility knives, but far more slippery than the Carnivore.
Both models are great! Stop the agony and get one or both

I acquired a Carny through BF.com in a trade...and over the last few weeks, I've carried it, and used it without hesitation...It makes an excellent utility knife. The only drawbacks i can see are: it's a bit heavy, and I wish the pocket clip screw went all the way into the liner...
