Carothers Performance Knives, Use & Abuse. Take 2

Some of you guys aren’t listening with both ears open. Nathan is only considering this because he’s already tooled up for it with the current BFK run. And because it’s a fricken badass knife. This is not the McDonalds drive through where you can substitute your diet Dr. Pepper for a chocolate milk shake. 1/4” BFK with a killer penetrator tip. I’m in. I will add it with my SDFK and Dek2 in my apocalypse tool kit.

The Fat Bastard Field Knife would be a very monumental field knife to make.
Would you consider lengthening it to 6 or 7 inches? Would a proper lengthening make it look more attractive

6-7 inch blade would be preferred by me, but I'm assuming set-up is for standard length. I would buy one if my computer was fast enough. Had to get my 2 CPKs from sellers here. I wouldn't pay the premium on this one though.

Even if you already had a DEK1? I'm still learning CPK variations so would like a picture of an FK and DEK1 together. I'm guessing you have some lying around?

Lots of pics are available in the various CPK sub-forum threads...

Here is a pic of JetLau3's FK3 and DEK1:

DEK1 was designed to function as a hunting knife- not specifically- but I kept that use in mind during conception. If you were to use it for that and fishing I'd highly recommend mounting a lanyard as the rear of the handle doesn't have a pronounced beak to grab on to if it's going to slip out of your hands. Other than that, the unobtrusive handle allows for a lot of different holds and to move from one to the other easily. Also, the high s grind and dropped point provide a nice svelte edge geometry and good point power and control, especially if you like to put the tip of your index finger up near the point.

FK1 was an amalgam of Nathan and my ideas on a compact, super tough minimally sized but useful for most stuff kind of knife. If you are parting out an animal, you might find the scraper at the butt of the handle to be a real problem. If you find yourself having to smash out a window in a sinking car or cut yourself out of the fuselage of some flying thing, or treat your knives like common tools, FK1 will be with you to the end. The scraper feature is super handy for popping tops, so if you like drinking beer you'll have an opportunity to use the knife without removing it from the sheath, which is especially handy if you've had a few.

They may be the same size, but in my view they are very different knives and if you have both it might be worth considering holding on to them until you've had enough time using them to figure out which one works best for you.

I don’t know of many makers, if any, that would willingly send a knife out to be “tested” like this.
Last I looked there were 2,000 views of that video.

Thank you Nathan for putting yourself out there like that and for the possibility of doing a preorder for those of us who want one.

I do pretty bananas shit with the knives here all the time. It was refreshing to watch someone else have to do it.
