Afternoon,

Found this old Carpenter Hatchet.. no handle with it. Wiped it off.. used warm water, dawn, some antibacterial soap. Dried it off. It’s currently soaking in evaporust.
Ordered new handle from house handles yesterday.
Does anyone know who this makers mark is? Can tell me anything about this particular head or hatchet as in weight, year made ect?

Van Camp, which was a hardware store in Indianapolis, Indiana. Probably made by Kelly, as I have Van Camp scythe blades that are definitely by them.
Interesting. Thank you. So definitely made in USA quality? Any idea on how old it could be? Might have been used by my dad in Michigan in the 1980s if old enough.

Definitely made in the USA. However, that doesn't mean that a tool is guaranteed not to be crap--we've built plenty of bad tools at all points in our history, lol -- but all the Van Camp ones I've seen are definitely good 'uns.

Glad to hear it’s made in USA. Very good point about possibility of crap tool. Hopefully this one isn’t. Regarding the handle I ordered.. ordered without knowing how to measure, just read online that most are smaller size. I ordered the size I circled.. what’s the proper way to measure what size eye my head has and need for handle?

Basically if it was made within the period where axe eyes were more or less standardized, you don't need to worry about it much. I expect that will fit it just fine. However, the length and width typically represent the maximum dimensions. Like I said, that Van Camp is most likely Kelly and the majority of Kelly items I come across are spectacular. The only fault I have with some of them is that they err on the hard side so can sometimes be a bit chippy.

Good to know there was a standard period of eye size. Hopefully it would be just the hatchet edge that would chip if at all so it can be resharpened, reprofiled. And not the hammer head.

What is the weight of the head? Majority of 1 1/4 lbs half hatchets used 14 inch replacement handles. The heavier the head the longer handle it usually requires.

Will have to weigh it after I get it out of the evaporust after 24 hours. Will let you know then

Very common model, just a roofers tool , yours hasn't been resharpened much if at all .
ebay is full of them , overpriced as is the custom .

Custom meaning how people want to make a which money as possible off whatever they have?

Lol! Yes it could definitely be from way back in 1980!

It’s a nice axe, enjoy using it.
