When we first began working with Carpenter steel over a year ago, there were many steels that we discussed. Carpenter has been exceptional in creating a number of steels that are good "knife blade steels".
We are proud to have been able to be the first to introduce Carpenter's CTS-XHP in a production knife. A stainless D2 alloy that has shown to be exceptional in knife blade qualities. you will surely see more Spyderco models using the excellent steel.
Another steel that was specially formulated to our request is Carpenter steel's new CTS-BD1. This is, in my opinion, an optimal formualtion for a blade steel. It is based on Hitachi's well known "Gingami I" (silver paper), also knows as G2 (early Spyderco's) and GIN 1 (current Spyderco's).
CTS-BD1 has been "tweaked" by Carpenter's metallurgist, Rick Gleixner and the result is very nice, and USA made.
I might also add that Carpenter Steel will have a booth at the Blade Magazine show next week. Rick will be there personally to answer questions and discuss knife steels with knife "afi's" and makers. A very bright guy that knows his sh*t.
It looks like our next Mule Team will be a short run of Carpenter's CTS-BD1. I would wait for Taz's official "announcement", but from here, that's what it looks like. We have three other Mule Teams in various stages of manufacture, but not yet to us. (one from Hitachi and 2 from Takefu).
It looks like Carpenter Steel will be another USA made option for us knife makers. Along with Crucible's excellent steels, the future is bright for the steel junky's.

The entire "business chain" from; raw materials, invention, design, manufacturing, marketing, selling, distributing, shipping, warrantees, insurance, credit, etc. ALL EXISTS to service the ELU (End Line User). Remove the ELU from the equation and the entire business chain falls like a house of cards. We all work for you!
