Does anyone know about this knife? specs/materials or is this one too far away from production to know any of the details. I have seen the pictures from Amsterdam and have fallen in love with that knife (along with the techno). I was just wondering if anyone could shed any light on the Carpenter

Hi Holmsie,

The Carpenter is a very special collaboration between Carpenter Steel Foundry and Spyderco. Carpenter wanted to have a special design made entirely of Steel made by Carpenter. They wanted; general prupose, good for hunting, user friendly, ergonomic, safe, legal in most areas, with a safe lock. Eric designed the knife over a 6 month period. The prototypes look much nicer than the model we had in Amsterdam.

The blade steel planned is CTS-XHP (a specially designed steel by Carpenter. It's a stainless, powdered D2). The front scale will be made from a jewelry grade steel called Bio-Blue. All of the steel parts are specially selcted to best perform the function needed. The first 3,000 or so pieces will be purchased by Carpenter for their employees. Then we plan production, but probably replacibg the Bio-Blue with a less expensive material.

I hope the Techno is being made as well. I'd like to see a tip-up carry option but I would buy it tip-down anyway. Gotta love frame-locks.

A fitting salute to the folks at Carpenter Steel. I was able to hold the Carpenter steel knife at Blade, it was something I would definitely buy. Not only for it's looks and design, but as a tribute to another domestic company turning out fantastic products. Was the knife at Blade the original version or the newer prototype?

switching handle materials? nice.... there goes a price jump on ebay if the bio blue handles show up.

Hi PineTree,

The newer prototypes were in the awards showcase Friday and Saturday. In the booth on Sunday. When did you hold them?

Sal, is there any chance at all that someone outside of Carpenter could get a Bio-Blue version?

It was on Friday, just one all steel knife with the Carpenter circular logo, from the prototype & concept case on the end.

I'd imagine if you placed a large steel order with Carpenter's sales dept they might help you out with that. ;)

True, but I would still need Spyderco to design, cut and sharpen all that Carpenter steel. At the risk of sounding like a salesman for employee motivation seminars, I want the synergistic collateral benefits from the combination of Spyderco and Carpenter.

I'd love to see the Bio-Blue made available to the rest of us as well... perhaps as a Sprint-run? I love the design. Please give Eric a raise... :)

Thanks Sal. I figure, "If you don't ask the answer will always be no". It would make a really great piece for a collection or use (I'd opt to use it).

Bio blue would be cool, but I don't think its worth the extra price (assuming it is a pretty large price difference)
