Carpo tunnel threat?

I've been doing a lot of bali-flipping with taped blade. No cuts of course, but after a while my fingers get numb and the tendon area under my thumb is sore. Maybe I'm too tense when I'm doing the exercises, or doing them for too long a period a time. Is there a risk of carpo tunnel here? eek

There's always a risk of carpel tunnels syndrome. That is one of the main reasons why Clay has finger and hand strengthening exercises on his site, to hopefully prevent carpel tunnel.

(is it carpo or carpel, I'm not sure, carpel ,I think, is what I've seen)

I think it's carpal tunnel. But who cares? if we get it we won't be able to type anyway.

I'll be sure to do more of the strengthening exercises in Clay's webpage. My guide up to now was Mike Janovich's video, which does not have these exercises.

well my mom is a transcriptionist, so she has it. then again, she's been typing for over 20 years so that'd do it.

We're all pretty much screwed

flipping and typing: a dangerous combination

Well, all I can say is I've been doing most of these finger exercises and stretches for years.

I've Also done a lot of BASS playing (pure torture on fingers) through over 20 years.

Between the BASS and the BAlisong we're talking a huge amount of repetitive stress, and so far everything is fine (knock on wood).

I think the key is balancing the musculature of the fingers. The combined exercises I give target the finger muscles from all movable angles.

Most carpal tunnel injuries occur because of repeated motion of the same type. In typing, it's that constant "pushing down" motion.

This causes that muscle group to become stronger than the other groups, and therefore throws everything out of balance.

Strength comes from balance.

Just my two cents but Carpal Tunnel Syndrome or (CTS) is mainly caused by forced flexation to the median nerve. Repetitive stress is the leading cause for this MSD.
