Carried, but not used?

Lately I've been seeing a few knives in For Sale area that they say "Carried but not used." Seeing that made me feel much better, because I carry two knives sometimes, one that's my new/nicer knife, and one that I'll actually cut stuff with. Does this sound odd? It does to me. I wonder why I even carry the knife that I have no intention of using. Basically the nicer a knife is, the more mail it gets to open...I have quite a few letter openers.

I know level of what's "nice" will vary from person to person, just as what an "expensive" is varies. I'm just wondering if anyone else carries a "nice" knife and a user. Why are we carrying a knife we don't really intend to cut anything with?

Responses please,

I carried my HALO II for nearly 6 months before I used it the first time. It was just hard for me to actually use a knife that cost so much. Not anymore! The first thing I did when I got my new HALO III was go out in the warehouse and cut open a box with lots of tape on it

I have the exact same problem. I carry an Emerson Raven every day, but I am not sure it has cut anything more than tape

I carry a Spyderco Q, or a Sog Gentlemans folder. I do all the cutting with those! Maybe someday I will actually cut with it. I doubt it though

I think there is a psychological factor that inhibits initial heavy use of a pricy folder without good reason. For some, just testing and working the blade is reason enough. Others, myself included at one time, need a "real" reason to give that $100-plus knife a workout.

Just remember, you're paying for quality and if it doesn't deliver, best to find out right away!

But why even carry it, if it's not going to get used? I think I carry knives that aren't going to be used, just so I can cycle them open and closed. Weird.

I don't own a lot of knives, compared to many members on the Forums, but I do own more than I need to cut what I need to cut on a day to daily basis. I carry a SAK, which gets the most use and I'm not affraid to lose it or abuse it, and it serves me well, and seems to upset nobody. I carry a Spyderco M. Walker lt/wt for when I need a one hand knife fast, or when I just need to flick something, (usually when I'm on the phone at work). I will carry a third knife just for show, when I know someone who wants to see one of my knives, these are not for using, that's not why I own them, and not why I'm carrying it.

Mitch,

You are hopelessly normal!

I carried my AFCK for months before I ever used it. Compared to some others it is not a very "nice or expensive" knife. To me, however, it was hard to take the chance on the first ding.

I solved that, while trying to flick it open I dropped it on a concrete floor and broke about 1/8 of an inch off the tip. By the time I finished hand grinding a new tip I had "worn the new off it".

NO! I don't flick knives anymore!

Hi all,
I'm the same way, I almost always carry a nice custom fixed bladed Siska, Easler or Anso, knowing full well that they will never see more than "light duty" use. I just can't bring myself to mar the inherent beauty of each respective knife. If I had an occupation that caused me to use a knife harder, I would always carry another one as a "user", as it is, I can get away with a "light duty" carry knife. There is always a "user" within easy reach anyway.

A thread the other day brought up many interesting thoughts on the subject of 'To use or not to use'. I think most of us try to at least treat our "better" knives more gingerly when possible, and many of us are downright "coddling" about it!
Take care,
Brian

Right now I am carrying 5 knives and there is no way I am going to need all of these while sitting in front of a computer. Even if out working I don't need more than one and always carry at least 3, 1 of those is a non-user I just like to carry it. My spyderco native gets the most use. Oh yeah, the reason I have 5 now is I just got some new ones and trying to see who gets bumped from the daily carry.

Hi Mitch,
I have the same problem, well almost the same. I carry several knives every day, but I never have anything to cut!

If I do find something (usually the mail) to open, I'll use my Halo 2. I carry the others to amuse myself with and to show my friends. I usually only have the newest ones in my collection on me.

If I find something that looks lke it will be REALLY hard to cut I will use a Benchmade Stryker with partial serrations.

UW Mitch,
You "use" the knife everytime you admire it and gain some pleasure from it's existance. Pretty much everyone on this forum has more knives than we possibly "need" but we enjoy them. That's the only justification needed. Needed here anyway. I wouldn't tell any medical professionals about your situation.

Me:"Uuh....yeah, something like that."

I agree with Paul.

I guess we all like to have nice things, even though we don't need them. I'm guessing that many of the members here are in office jobs, and most of the knives owned open mostly mail. There's nothing wrong with it as long as it makes us happy.

It's nice to have nice things, and what's the point of having them, if they just sit in a a drawer or a closet. If nothing else, it's a good idea to carry your knives (even if you aren't going to use them) so that they can get some fresh air, and feel loved.

Mitch,

Thanks for creating such a timely and interesting thread. I find myself in that situation time and time again, and sometimes I ask myself "why do I carry all these knives for?".

I guess I couldn't find any decent answer other than what Paul said.

Its a heck of a letter opener though!

"War to the knife and knife to the hilt"

You are not alone...
I carry a CS 4" Voyager, and I use it to cut strings on bales of hay and open boxes. But if I need to strip wire I fall back to my 37/8" Old Timer Stockman, it's superior for most things I do with a pocket knife. But it's not a weapon!!! As soon as my Concealed Weapons Permit gets in I'll be packing a Kel-Tech P32 and the old timer!!!

I usually carry 3 or 4 knives with me every day.I have an AFCK which is my daily beater blade. Then there's a small SAK on the keyring which is mainly a loaner for people who don't have the sense to carry their own knife.Next is a William Henry or nice a custom for my own personal light duty use around sheeple. It also serves the purpose of just being a beautiful object that happens to be useful.Last but not least is the Civilian which has never been used and hopefully never will be.
The only knives I own that are not used at all are customs that cost in excess of $750 and limited edition production knives that are not easily replaced.I won't even mention the autos which are illegal to own let alone carry in the police state that I reside in.
