Carry but will not use?

I have a collection of very small knives, and I rarely carry any of them, not because I wouldn't use them, but because they're not really a lot of use! :D

Apart from that, I'd be prepared to use any of my knives, that's why I carry them. On an average day, they don't get used as much as when I was younger, but it's a very rare day when I don't use my pocket knife at least a couple of times  I was using the punch on a hundred year-old knife, the other day, for starting off the holes I was about to drill into brickwork  I should probably have got something out of my tool-box, but I had a pocket-knife in my pocket, and it's there for using. There was no damage to the knife

I've got a little custom peanut that I carry but not use. It arrived about the same time my grandson did . My thought is that I'd carry but save the blades for him. Sometimes I have to sort it out in my pocket, to get what I want. It's mildly annoying.

The majority of the knives I take to work look new because they are slip carried and handle tough tasks like opening envelopes, but they do get used. My larger knives that are carried on the weekends definitely get used quite a bit! If I can’t bring myself to carry a knife I will move it on.

Every knife I have can and will probably be used to cut at least paper, rope, boxes ,etc...however if I have a particularly nice knife that I want to baby ,I will usually not cut stuff thats dirty or gritty ,I will use one of my work knives pm2,SAK,Manly,Steel Will,etc...oh I take that back I have a large Case stockman that was my dads ,he passed away 35yrs ago and it still has the edge he put on it,that I will never use.

I have to use them-knives are for cutting. I may carry more than I actually use, but some have a thinner profile exclusively for cutting/slicing, and some are for a little more rugged use. I always have a fixed on me too-it doesn’t always see the light of day, but when it does, no tears over using $400 worth of steel. That’s why I bought it-to use.
Thanks, Neal

Every knife I've purchased I intended to carry and use, with a few exceptions. I don't carry or use the forum knives I've purchased. I don't carry or use the few knives that were my dads.
I've got quite a few custom knives that get carried and used regularly, but I do take care to maintain them and not abuse them. They open envelopes, cut string, open blister packs, do a little whittling and peel the occasional apple or cut a sandwich in half. I always keep them sharp. I carry them in some manner of pouch that helps keep them nice and keeps them from slipping out of my pocket. That's just me. I take care of all my stuff.
I've got kitchen knives for food, specific knives I use on the trout stream or in the woods and a few that are relegated to garden and yard work.

I've had some knives that I bought for a specific aesthetic reason, like particularly attractive handles, etc. After receiving them, I sometimes was on the fence for awhile, in deciding if I liked them as well for purely functional purposes. In cases like that, I've dropped them into my pocket and carried them for a 'trial run', if you will, to see if I really wanted to establish it as a user. The ones that made me hesitate usually had issues with blade grinds or profiles that weren't necessarily my favorites; and making a commitment to use them usually meant I was going to have to do some pretty heavy reprofiling or whatever, to make them usable to my satsifaction. So, I'd carry them for awhile, to decide if it was worth the extra work or not. Some got weeded out because I discovered they didn't carry as comfortably in-pocket as I prefer, because they were too large or too bulky, odd shape, unevenly balanced, etc. It's very rare when I devote extra work to those, in reprofiling blades or whatever, knowing I won't really like carrying them anyway.

I still have quite a few of those 'maybe' knives. And unfortunately, they spend most of their time stashed away somewhere. Once in a while, I'll get a wild hair to drop them in my pocket again, to revisit the possibility of making it a regular-carry knife.

......here in silly-law-ridden UK, if I carry it, I want to use it, any excuse...........wished I lived a more country life where I would likely use a knife more

I look after all my knives, there's only one (K390 blade) that has a patina, the rest get cleaned so they're at their best.......just in case the lens of a camera gets poked their way ;)

Drawer queens stay in the safe...

I have many knives and am willing to carry and use them all.

Just not willing to carry and use them in all situations.

I have many knives that I don't carry, for a variety of reasons (cost is NOT one of them).
But if I'm carrying it, then I'll use it, everything from $4 imports to $400 customs.
I am in the same category as Jeff... except substitute $400 custom knife with $130 Schrade Cut Co's :)

I recently sold a beautiful GEC Washington jack in smooth autumn gold bone because I could not bear to scratch it up. Now I have a Lionsteel Shuffler, all titanium, stainless steel and M390 blade to use the heck out of and not worry about scratches or rust

I suspect that I may have too many knives....I also suspect that many others here are fortunate enough to be in the same boat :D:cool:

This means that many knives do get neglected, possibly forgotten about and my tastes and moods may change which may mean some knives get used more than others. However, if I really like a knife I WILL want to use it for what it's for - cutting things;) and if it works well I'll be wanting to use it again- but there are many contenders and obviously some tasks suit different knives. When I don't use or carry a knife it's because it doesn't suit me, I will often keep it mint as it could be traded or sold later for something that can be used with pleasure:thumbsup:
