Unfortunately, for toxic (chemical contamination), your best bet is carrying it. Bio pathogens are easy to kill/filter, but not chemical. We've had some pretty serious professional chemists chime in on this before, and it's a very exacting science.
I always do both. Thinking about my hikes recently and i guess its mostly planning but their has been water on all of them. I always carry Chlor-floc and a pocket water filter. Down here in NC I go through water a lot quicker than I did in Upstate NY so I have to drink river or stream water often. Here's some good info too. I kind of think this process through before I hike. Granted no matter what with all the crap in our food these days its hard to be free of all the nastiness but at at least I try. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hpx0bRt1K0g
the mini works fine, flush it frequently and use a gravity feed setup
Sometimes you can get air trapped doing it how I have it set so you can use the smaller bag that comes with it and cut open the bottom and there are no flow issues or air lock problems and still use it as a gravity system as pictured over on the right hand side of the pic
