Carry Knife on Airplane?

When I lived in and was traveling in Asia (Taiwan, Hong Kong, Korea), my carry knife was a regular-sized Victorinox Spartan SAK. I was never questioned about it in any airport. However, I have heard different experiences by others. I left Taiwan in 1992, don't know if anything is different.

Another point to make is personal appearance. I think a lot of airport security will look at the same knife carried by 2 different people, and if they perceive one guy as a bit scruffy, they might more likely view him with suspicion than a nicely-dressed person. That is totally unfair, but
people do it all the time. Of course, I talked to a businessman who got hassled over a small penknife that was in his briefcase.

I was recently on vaca in sunny FLA. At my disposal were:
1 SAK Huntsman carried
1 Spydie Co-pilot, Carried as money clip
Both put into the tray for the walk through

1 Leatherman PST
CS Voyager 3" Tanto
Key ring w/ Micra, Sak Classic & Lady Bug
These were in a carry on.

No questions were ever asked. But for some reason even though knives weren't on me I kept setting off the damn metal detector.
At every security point I'm standing there like a criminal being "searched" by a portable wand. What's up with this??

Two years ago, my wife and I spent 3 weeks in Germany, Italy, and Switzerland vacationing. I brought a Leatherman PST II everywhere, including carryon for the international flights, no problems whatsoever. We flew Denver to O'Hare, then to Frankfurt.

Last year, we flew to Moscow (Russia, not Idaho) twice via O'Hare and Vienna (Austrian Air), and Dulles and Frankfurt (Lufthansa). This time I had a Leatherman Flair, no problems anywhere.

I will say this, however. I was denied entrance to the Kremlin with the Flair. Luckily, they had baggage checking at the entrance. You've never seen such tight metal detectors as at the Kremlin...

I always packed my cutlery in my carry on bag thin edge up so it looks like nothing but a slim strip of metal to the X-ray machines. Never been asked to open the bag. The only thing that ever did was the bag with my camera and Palm III keyboard, too many circuit boards I guess.

Just to let everyone know. I stuck the stockman behind my drivers license fold out in a pocket and dropped the wallet in the tray. I was fine on the flight to Orlando and the return although on the return the security guard checked out the wallet but after a second let me go. Thanks for all the info guys.

P.S. On another note. I just got my Sharpmaker 204 and it works like a charm. It is nice to feel confident that I can sharpen my own knives!! Later.
