I had something like the Mercharness in my mind. I'll have to order one and give it a try. I don't like clipping stuff to the pack, because I don't want to rely on my memory to switch to the belt every time I step away from the pack or make camp. With my luck, I'd need the knife, and it would be strapped to the pack just out of reach. I also tend not to wear a belt backpacking, because the pack hip belt leaves bruises (not much padding on the hip bones) and any extra material underneath leaves pressure points.
I carry a range of things on hikes - Chris Reeve Mountaineer, Busse Mean Street, Karensuado pukko (in dangler sheath, though the thong is a bit short). I've been looking at Bark Rivers as well. The Mean Street is already set up in an invert-able sheath. I may have to fiddle with the other options.
