Carrying a large folder on a belt sheath

horizontal on the back of your waist band.

To each his own, but boy I sure wouldn't carry that way, I've slipped and fallen down a flight of stairs, hit my tailbone. And fallen in parking lots when I hit ice, same result. If a big horizontal fixed blade mounted there, hello quadriplegic lifestyle.

22, how are you able to carry a fixed blade HORIZONTALLY on a belt sheath without it sticking out and really getting in your way? I haven't tried it myself, but having a hard time imaging a fixed blade that you could hold with any stability that is much shorter than 6.5" to 7", so that's the minimum length (plus sheath) for a horizontal belt carry.
I wanted to add that many use the Tek Lock to attach a kydex sheath to their belt. It sticks out because of the way the attachment is made.

Large folder but your point is taken.

My 15 year old came home with a "hickey" on her neck. Her excuse was she fell on the stairs...
My reply was, "I am 40 years old, and have never once fallen on my neck."
Maybe I was just lucky?:D

do all the time. various buck folders that come with sheaths and autos, otfs etc mainly.

frees up pocket space, easy to get to quickly when shirt is tucked in, keeps autos without safeties and only recessed buttons from opening and causing trouble.

You are right, some of those Dozier fixed designs are extremely cool. Apparently other people think so too. On the following linked page it says: "Our current backlog is approx. 3 years."

I was thinking "6 months". Anyway, keep an eye of AG Russell's website. He sells lots of Bob's knives as well as keep an eye on the ones Bob sells weekly (featured inventory). I suspect these are one's that were ordered and then the customer backed out.

The only folder I currently carry in a belt sheath is my BM 62. I use the factory sheath. The Flytanium handles are longer than stock, but it still fits fine.

I carried a Buck 110 in the Buck supplied leather belt sheath for 20+ years before shifting to a couple of smaller folders for pocket carry, replacing the belt knife with fixed blades.

I had a cross-carry sheath made for my Puma fixed blade a few years back, and couldn't be happier with it. It's not really horizontal; hangs from belt at about a 45 degree angle. Perfect.
Hopingto find one (been looking) for my Buck 112. Meanwhile, I usually carry it in the regular Buck sheath - a litttle bulky in the pocket, depending what I'm wearing, and doing.

I got this sheath for my 110 from John of JK Knives several years ago and it is my favorite belt-carry folder. I have several older Large folders with factory leather sheaths that have snap closure flaps and I have no problems with them.

I make these for Buck 110s and larger:

Nuther idea. Kinda in between:

Drop said pouch into your pocket with knife. Need knife, pull on thong that attaches to your belt loop (no belt needed) and knife pops out of pocket. Use knife , put back into pouch and drop back in to pocket. Just another thought.

Those are great looking, thx for the pics! Do you also make any of these, or have people asking, to make them for horizontal belt carry? Or do you find that when you get to a folder that's around 5" long closed, it's just too big for practical/safe horizontal belt carry at that point?

So you now carry a folder AND fixed, or you've gone entirely to fixed? Interested to hear your setup.

I've made many, many horizontal sheaths, but mostly for fixed blades. Most folders don't have the shape I need for proper retention for horizontal carry. I have done some in my Pancake sheath that carries at more of a 45 instead of a true horizontal.

My own personal Horizontal knife and sheath:

Doesn't get in the way during active use:

A friend's Pancake, rides more at a 45:

Doesn't interfere either:

To a point that others have brought up. This young lady and her husband have both carried large fixed blades of my making, over many, many miles of rough terrain. Their preference is small of the back carry:

Rough active use too:

Really not any different than a holstered pistol.

HAD TO!
Sorry OP....

Did you notice how they all have the exact same kind of wood for the handles with the same wear / apparent age to them ?
The props department may have done a decent job aging the handles, but it's way too unlikely they'd all have the same wood, be the same age, and have the same amount of wear / use, especially when he leaves them stuck in dead guys and stuff and I'm sure has to replace some of them here and there.
I know this is way off topic, but as a knife enthusiasts I just couldn't help but notice. Now because you posted the picture, it's your fault that I brought this thread off track :D

I have a bigger issue than the handles all matching. HOW sharp can all those blades be when most of them are held in at the tip areas with what looks like a piece of CORD or ROPE? :-) I call it ridiculous,.....much like if an officer stopped him and he argued: "Officer,...it's just my EDC!" HA!

I carry everything shown in the picture as my literal EDC when leaving the farm. Different knives for different tasks.

And Yes, I also carry a whistle, digital recorder and a thumb drive every where I go. The thumb drive carries all my medical history, contact information, sales presentations, plus a ton of other information.

I use the recorder to make notes while driving - 1 button to start recording rather than a password, app start, etc on a phone.

The whistle is for alerting folks, recalling wayward dogs and, if necessary, alerting searchers to my location - I can blow a whistle for a lot longer than I can yell loud enough to be found if injured out in a pasture. The sound carries further than a yell, as well.

I used the whistle just this past Friday evening. I was unloading my groceries into my truck when a cart got away from someone and it was rolling down hill towards a couple who were unloading their own groceries and not paying attention. Trust me:cool:, they looked up real quick when I put out a double tone blast on a British police whistle. They would have just ignored a yell.

Even when I only carried folders (while on active duty with the Navy, reserve weekends and annual call-ups and working corporate desk jobs), I ALWAYS had at least 2 and sometimes 3 or 4 folders. I would simply pull out the one needed for the task at hand. I always had at least 1 fixed blade even when I had a corporate desk job as I was on the company's Emergency Response Team and had a fixed blade riding on my gear belt.

One of the Kabars gets replaced with a larger blade as the job requires around the farm. The thumb drive and recorder get left behind when working around the farm.

Hi! The only folder I carry (most of the times) in its sheath is this one. The G. Sakai NHF it’s a rather substantial folder and I like to carry it when hiking/camping, a little less for urban EDC (though I have it in rotation this week :)). The sheath carry when hiking it’s almost an obliged choice for me, since the folder it’s quite heavy and I find it a bit cumbersome when loose in the pocket (it has no clip) of hiking tech trousers. No problem with cargo/jeans. The sheath it’s truly well-made with quality leather .
