Carrying a modern folder in my pocket (no clip).

OP worried about tearing up furniture etc - here are some suspension clips for you to research. They come in several sizes and the smaller ones wont endanger furniture etc as much...if at all. Ti Gearpull, Munroe Mega Dangler, Obstructures Small Pry/Open Tool, Pangea Designs Pickpocket Torq, TTpockeTTools TT-Capper, Atwood Hangman, TEC P7 Suspension Clip

I do carry my 3 xm-18 in pocket without the clip, but it begins to turn sideways and just creates an impression of a knife. Might be a little counter productive, but sometimes I don't like advertising me pocket knife to the public

How about carrying a knife clipped in-waist-band, or in a leather belt sheath?

I've been carrying a Higo-X in a belt sheath, and I'm really loving the freedom it gives my pocket!

I only carry sans clip. I removed the clip from, and regularly carry a Delica, Caly 3, Chaparral, Dragonfly, CS Mini Recon 1, or a BM 707. I never miss the clip on a knife this size. I carry the Delica most of all. The clips irritate me.

This is one traditional that can be flicked open if you grab it by the blade. It's a fill size blade that is compact carry.

I'm actually considering that as well.

My job frowns on seeing knives clipped to pockets, so I've tried several different knives without clips to see which one works the best for me. I've found the Spyderco Salt 1 with clip removed is about perfect. Its flat, and extremely light (1.9 oz with the clip) and due to the knife's profile, it doesn't move around much in my pocket at all.

I do carry clipless modern folders, but use a self made pocket holster for that. It keeps the knife upright and protects it against scratches from keys etc. Also pocket lint will not get in the mechanism. I have experiences of lint jamming the lock of a Spyderco backlock.

I rarely carry clipped to my pocket, except in the case of my Emerson karambit for it's wave. Sometimes my other Emersons too, but mostly even those are just carried loose in a slipcase.

I use slipcases pretty much all the time for all of my folders---they keep the knives cleaner and free of scratches and dings. It also keep them from imprinting and makes them more comfortable to carry and easier to withdraw.

I never take a clip off of a knife though as I like the extra hold and leverage they give me for one-hand opening and flicking. In fact, for me a clip is strictly an opening aid rather than for attaching to my pants.

If made the right way, a holster can also minimize the effect of the knife 'printing' in the pocket, as that is a concern for some. The above holster looks like it will blur the outline of the knife just fine.

It does. It also does not matter much what is the size of the knife, I use this with almost every knife I own. They can be quite loosely in the holster but it still keeps them put.

I can see, how that could work well.

Beautiful Enzo BTW. They sure do make some great knives.

I usually remove clips, but not from some models that are narrow, since the clip helps with one hand opening. I always carry in the pocket. If you stay a bit under 4" you will find carry more comfortable. Even 4" is OK, as long as the handle isn't too thick. It all depends on how large the pockets are.
I don't like to use the clip, since I found that sitting in a car and driving will tend to move the knife free and up out of the pocket. I also won't carry a liner lock with anything else in the pocket. Not only can coins jam inside the blade and handle, but a car key can open the blade. It happened, and I don't want that to happen again. An aluminum handle will pick up scratches from other stuff in the pocket. CF is better for this if you want other things in the same pocket as the knife.

I'd say any knife with good blade retention would be an easy no-clip carry option. Lockbacks are a no-brainer for that route - I don't know if I'd trust a linerlock/framelock, though.

Axis locks, piston locks, captive bearing locks, and button locks would also be safe options.

I've never really had an issue with clips damaging things or suffering anything but minor scratches. Maybe you should just be more aware of your body relative to your environment...? I'd be too worried about a knife falling out of my pocket, honestly.

Well said - to which I will add - that for years I carried knives in my back pocket without clips. I was very happy to have discovered clips because ALL of my rear pockets had permanent and unsightly wear spots and eventually tears from pocket carry knives whereas with the pocket clip I only truly wear out the edge of work jeans that EDC a knife on a clip. Casual use pants - no issues with wear spots or rips or knives getting away with the clip method. The only knives I will now carry without clip MUST fit in the "watch pocket" that still is a feature on many pants, dress and casual - in other words - small gents knives.

Holsters are a good alternative :thumbup:

For the most part I agree, except on two points: 1) the Boker Plus CLB line all have very strong ball detents and I'd recommend them for in-pocket carry, except the Keycom if loose change is carried in the same pocket, with details here. 2) My first clipped knife was an early Endura that snagged on the striker plate of my bedroom door and snapped off. I also once snagged a Nite-Ize metal add-on clip and bent it out such that it was no longer usable.

I tried carrying IWB and lost one knife--a Salt I--and came close to losing a PPT, so apparently IWB and clips don't work for me. There's also three other alternatives:

1) Get a Mission Wallet or similar pocket organizer and carry your knife in it;

2) As Mike Janich once wrote in Tactical Knives, cut a piece of Kydex to fit your pocket and clip the knife to that. The knife remains at the top of your pocket and ready for drawing, but unseen to others and won't snag on things;

3) Get a Pocket Shield and cut it to fit. Same principle as #2 with the addition of mounting existing kydex sheaths/holsters to it, albeit more expensive.

I'm the one that started the other pocket clip thread recently, and while I guess I am not officially done with all of them, I can recommend the Manix 2 Lightweight sans clip. Tons of knife in a thin, light profile. Really disappears in the pocket.

Personally, I cant stand things sitting in the bottom of my pockets. Even loose change. To me, the pocket clip was the best thing to ever happen to folding knives since the leather belt pouch.

I had the Ritter grip for a time. It's not the mini but the full sized. The whole thing about the grip is the width of handle. Comfy while using but big in your pocket. If you don't like bulk in your pocket that may be an issue with the mini or may not. IDK. just something to think about.

I've been using the delica. The lock gets fouled up with pocket lint every once and again but it carries nice and cuts well. Worth the occasional blow off IMO. ;)
