Carrying A Slippie Everyday?

You do nice work Gary.

I too have been converting from the almighty pocket clip or in my case clips, been eleven days now and I don't even have the shakes.

I dropped one of my Queen E-Z openers in my back pocket and a little Western all metal lb in the watch pocket of m jeans and have been getting by good so far.

Thanks Helle, my sheaths are more tight fitting style than Augustus88's but that
one he posted looks like it cradles the knife sweetly, soft leather that would
allow a range of folders to fit in there. Always like seeing other's leather work
keeps the passion of the craft alive, a good thing!
One of these days I'll need to get a BackPocket folder myself!

That`s a very fine piece of leatherwork, augustus88!
The perfect way to carry a folder in the pocket or the waistband!

@Gary W. Graley
Wow, you do some very nice leatherwork, too! I like all of them!:thumbup:

Thanks to everyone for the replies... by the way those are some very nice looking sheaths that you guys made. I like the idea of locking up the pocket clip knives for a month. I always wear jeans and the knives I have been carrying are of the size that I always clip them into my watch pocket. I will try putting a stockman in there and see how it works.... Might be nice to have a sheath like the ones that were made, would be great for a trapper or a mini trapper. Now I have to go through the collection and see which knife gets the honors, I think it will be a green bone tested xx razor edge stockman.
Its one of my favorites.

Now the kind of pants you wear may have a bearing on this. If you have dress pants, you won't feel much comfort with much more than a peanut, or a mini-trapper.

I wear dress pants quite seldom, as I don't usually need them for work.

I don't find dress pant that comfortable, but 2 things that increase the comfort factor are my Bose pearl 5-blade Rogers pattern in the right front pocket and my Bose Backpocket in, of course, the right back pocket.:D

Just amazing how that works. If ya gotta dress-up, ya gotta carry dress-up knives.

I carry slipjoints 99% of the time now. Different pattern or size depending on what pants or shorts I'm wearing and what kind of knife I need. Now, on the rare occasion I clip a knife to my pocket, I get annoyed when I scratch the back of my hand trying to get to my keys or whatever. It's just a matter of what you get used to. A good alternative is a 4 or 4.5 inch back pocket knife. They're a great fit in a side tool pocket, or the back pocket of a pair of jeans. I sure wish someone would come out with a production version of the bose back pocket designs. U listening, Case?

I went through this about a year ago before buying a William Henry Clip Case at the suggestion of a Bladeforum member. It worked pretty well so I made some heavy duty modified versions of my own. I made three different sizes to accommodate my EDC rotation. The case rides inside the pocket and protects the knife while providing easy access. Now I have the convenience of a modern clip knife and the traditional appeal of a slip-joint.

That's an EXCELLENT practical sheath:thumbup:

You selling these at all or where can I get something similar?

Good looking scales on that Crandall Peanut, my favourite version:thumbup::thumbup:

Thanks for the compliments folks!

I can't come close to the beautiful workmanship on the sheaths in Gary's post, but I think I did a pretty good job for my 2nd attempt. Unfortunately I'm not selling more of the cases. I just made three sizes to accommodate my EDC rotation. My goal was to to create rugged, practical little clip cases that are more durable than attractive. I like my William Henry Clip Case II, but it isn't holding up well under heavy use. The leather I chose for my homemade sheath looks very much like the tan pigskin work gloves that you can pick up at any hardware store. I purchased the leather and rivets at Michael's arts and crafts. The leather/canvas stitching awl and waxed thread was purchased off eBay. The clip came off a cheap cellphone holster from Lowes. The wider clip feels more secure in my pocket and it provides more carrying options than a narrow knife style clip. I'd be happy to share my do-it-yourself experience if you want to try making one.

I agree that the Crandall green bone scales are very attractive. Not sure which I like better the Crandall bone or the new smooth, antique, natural bone that's on my Case Tiny Toothpick with scrolled bolsters.

You got use to a pocket clip, you will get use to pocket carry. Trust me.

For the past few years, I have carried nothing but knives with pocket clips. My main carry is a Camillus demo. Great little knife. I have a Sebenza, SNG and SMF that I forego carrying in favor of the Demo. It is not a better knife than those, but it is smaller and easier to tote around.

I'd love to see a how-to for those sheaths! That sheath pictured is really neat.

I've tried pouches and lanyards for small clipless knives but they always seemed cumbersome and awkward. I've always gone back to simple deep pocket carry. I usually have a small knife in the front left pocket with my cell phone. It moves around sometimes but doesn't really bother me. I prefer pulling a knife out of the pocket, using it, closing it, then simply dropping it in my pocket and carrying on. I find this is alot easier than pulling a knife out of a pouch then re-pouching it or even unclipping and reclipping a knife with a pocket clip.

Problem is, I am so used to carrying a knife with a pocket clip, and when I put a slippie in my pocket, it drives me nuts... Usually ends up layin sideways and looks like somethin wierd is goin on in my pants LOL... .

I know what you're saying!!! I carry an old Ka-Bar peanut most days only because work is so anti-knife. I wear Levi's and the peanut fits quite nicely in the little coin pocket. When I carry my Buck stockman I get the same sideways carry and I can't use my clip on sheath. When I am not at work I use the sheath - much more comfortable.

I have a couple of suits from Men's Wearhouse that came with vertical pouches sewn in the right front posket. Never knew what they were useful for since I always carried something slim with a pocket clip. Decided I wanted to carry a slippy and got a Case medium stockman. That pouch is perfect - leaves about 3/4" of the knife free. Much easier to remove than tugging on a pocket clip. Haven't tried retrofitting some of my other pants yet, but it sounds easy enough, and definitely worth the effort.

Yeap , great jos on those sheaths guys. , nice to see folks still work leather and decide to DIY.

If I carry a larger slippie it goes into my back pocket next to my wallet where it stays in place.
I think it all depends on what sort of pants you wear but , yea I cant put a large slipjoint in my front pocket , they do not ride right.
The danger of watch pockets is the knife slipping out and getting lost , imo.

Was in the US for work.
I purchased leather knife pouches with snap flaps.

I have been wearing a small one on my belt with a slippie inside.
I work in a semi formal office in Hi Tech.
It just looks like a small cell phone pouch and passes easily

In the Northeast 90% of the male population have Leathermans on their belts.I can't resist carrying a nice slip joint along for good company.

I seem to be one of those Neanderthals who has never gotten used to using pocket clips. To me, they offer very few advantages in accessibility, they are a pain to carry, and they are almost as conspicuous as knives that are carried in a belt sheath. Give me "deep pocket carry" anytime!

One pattern that has yet to be suggested is the canoe. To me, this pattern is the best choice for "carry-ability" and inconspicuous pocket signature in a "working size" pocket knife.
