Carrying around in your pocket.

I was told any knife, folding or fixed, in a sheath or pouch was illegal to carry if it had a blade over 3".
The police didn't care to hear about the, "Carrying with unlawful intent" part.

Fortunately the police will have to prove their assertions in court and deal with lawyers and judges. Being an a**hole counts against them in court, so I suspect that they are counting on intimidation to work without having to take it further.
Be respectful, firm, know and quote the law.

Here in Croatia knife is regarded as weapon only if it was used in that way or in places where it is forbidden(courts, football game, etc, but in that cases even the umbrella is weapon,or glass bottle). At the other hand, daggers, bayonets, knuckles, sabers, swords and other which only purpose is to make injure or death are cold weapons, and it is illegal to carry those around(not posses at home).Machete is agricultural tool.

I always have Ontario Airforce Survival 499 in my backpack(there was different knives in last 25 years, this is in last two years),and VIC in FAK,and I have never had any problems.

A few times that I had to do some papers at the Court I left backpack at security and took it back on my way out.

But well said;"if a cop wants you cuffed and stuffed, thats most likely what is gonna happen".

What concerns me is the financial loss caused by a cop in a bad mood, (confiscation of knife, having to hire a lawyer, etc.).
They know that they won't win the case, but they know they can cost you alot of money.

As a responsible knife carrying adult, I feel that it is MY responsibility to do my BEST to find out what the knife laws are in my state, and places that I am going to visit.
We are a large and knowledgeable community here, and we DO have a knife laws section here.

I guess what I'm asking is, what are we supposed to do when the police ignore the law, (which is black and white) on the subject.

If you go to the station the next day and can't convince them to give you the knife back, (assuming you weren't arrested) then if it's worth the aggravation, go to court.
But personally, unless I had a HUGE emotional or financial attachment to the knife, I'd just ROLL WITH IT!

They know that they won't win the case, but they know they can cost you alot of money.

Life is NOT always fair.

it doesn't really matter what the knife law says is illegal , if a cop wants you cuffed and stuffed, thats most likely what is gonna happen. (whether you have a knife or not.)

A lot of times a cop will use his/her discretion when dealing with certain situations.
It doesn't always matter that the legislated law is in your favor, especially in a "weapon" situation.
They will control the situation as they see fit.

Something to keep in mind ANYTIME you are dealing with a cop is this;
Cops have a "special" place in their hearts for IDIOTS, and it is NOT a kinder or gentler place!

Judges OFTEN agree with cops.

It all depends on your attitude.

Maybe not "all", but definitely ALOT.

And for the record; I wholeheartedly support cops in their (unofficial) "IDIOT" policy.

Regards, CM.

PS. I'm not meaning to imply that anyone in here is an idiot.
I'm just saying, it's not a good idea to cop an attitude with a cop! :)
