Carrying fatwood in pockets?

I was thinking about drilling a hole in a piece of fatwood to attach it to my keychain with my firesteel. Will the resin rub off in my pockets and ruin my pants and jackets?

Not enough to ruin it but it may smell nice though. I would think that very high heat may make the fatwood sweat some pitch, but something tells me you won't have that problem.

Let it sit for a day or two, that seems to get most of the "sweat" out of the wood. A leatherman small screwdriver makes a perfect drill for smaller pieces of fatwood.

Someone on this forum puts shrink tubing on his firesteel. Apologies to whoever that is, but you could put some on your fatwood with a drop of hot glue to seal the hole in the bottom of the shrink tube, once it's been shrunken that is. If not then maybe you could wrap that sucker in some duct tape, but it woon't look too pretty. Just my .02.

Hmm, I wonder if a coat of varnish or clear spray paint like Krylon would keep the sap at bay?

I wrapped mine with cotton twine. I got the cotton wet first and it has stayed nice and tight. The piece i used was covered with resin/sap and some of it was flaking off a little. I used the string to keep all the goodness. I also thought that i could maybe use the cotton during the firestarting.

I've used the shrinkwrap on my firesteels.

Actually thinkin about drillin the end of a piece of the mayawood, and putting the BSA Spark Lite in it, then shrinkwrapping the entire package.

If I really really need it, sap will be the last of my concerns....

If you have a Harbor Freight or its equivalent, they sell a combo pack of shrink tubing several sizes up to 3/4", maybe larger.

I've been carrying a piece of fatwood in my jeans pockets for weeks now with no problem with sap/resin getting on my clothes. I bought a box of the stuff they sell at Lowe's for $5.00, cut off a small chunk approximately the length of my firesteel and striker, smoothed the edges and got rid of any splinters. I drilled a hole in the fatwood and carrying the whole bundle with a piece of orange cord to hold it together. Seems to work great and takes up minimal space.

No.

I've been carrying a piece of fatwood on a keychain, in my pocket, for years. There has never been any issue with resin rubbing off, yet. No special measures are necessary.

That's exactly what I had planned. I bought a box of fatwood at the local home improvement store the other day and I was searching through the box for the nicest looking piece to do the same as you.

Good to know before I potentially ruin a new jacket. I'm going to give it a try then. Thanks.
