Carrying fixed blades in public.

I am not allowed to carry a FB to work, but on the weekends and evenings[if I go out] I almost always carry a FB. The largest of which is a 5" blade Blackwood. I've never received any negative comments, and just a few evil glances [that I've noticed anyway].

I have an email in to Bob Dozier, as to whether he’s ever designed a Kydex pocket clip sheath for his fixed blades. I’d like something I can slip into my front pocket at work, and a Dozier is certainly an excellent working knife.

I also plan on ordering a fixed blade from Jens Anso before the year is out. Those Personal Sheepsfoot knives look perfect for public fixed blade carry.

The Jens Anso knife it beautiful. It was featured in TK and then, in another issue showing Tek-Lok, the author sported the Anso knife in a horizontal tek-lok carry sheath. Nice and neat.

If Dozier won't do it, there's some good sheath companies that will ....

Knife? What knife?

I always carry a fixed blade, all day every day. Why would you carry a knife that is broken:D.

All funnin aside, take a look at the photo and see how invisible a knife can be when carried in plain view.

Living in Southern California it is almost impossible to carry any kind of knife w/o getting looked at weird, so I rarely carry a FB. I have a SOG seal pup I sometimes clip into the back of my pants, but I mainly wear my FBs when I go camping or Fishing. No one tries to take the spot of a fisherman who has 12" KA-BAR or a 15" Ontario Bowie hanging off his belt.
I love to wear my FBs and would like to get one of those concealed sheaths, but how do you conceal a 1'1/2 knife? I like BIG fixed blades, but a small one will do I guess.

I frequently carry a Busse Assault Shaker horiz. on my belt, or in one of my front pockets.

As you can see, its rather unobtrusive, especially when worn with black or grey pants, or a rather loose shirt. The sheath is the oem neck sheath, just rewired for belt carry.

I've got a Busse Skeleton Key on order, I'll give that some carry time as well.

I carry fixed blades a lot of the time, mostly of my own making. I'm a middle aged male with a very conservative look so I don't get bothered much or have to endure many dirty looks. I do get them from time to time and depending on my mood I'll just smile or smile and engage them in small talk till I can get around to my knife. It's amazing to me how people's opinions can be swayed by a little kindness and information. I've found that many "dirty" looks come from ignorant pre-conceived notions that people who carry knives are mentally unstable and/or are prone to violent acts. This has been a lie propogated by Hollywood and our wonderful left wing media.:barf:
A little truth, some understanding and a kind disposition works wonders.

I do carry a FB occasionally, but I'm not going to tell you where. Read my location and you'll know why.
I just got some funny remarks by a guy in HOK (I was chatting with the clerk) The guy had a SAK on me that was dull as hell and asked me why I need a Spyderco Endura that has a lock and could be opened one handed. I told him it was much more convenient than his SAK, and when he take his SAK to whack branches (yes he told me he did... boy this guy got guts for his fingers), he'd be more prone to have his blade folding on him and make some nasty cuts on his finger, unlike my Endura. He's still unconvinced.
Some people just never understand, and I'm not about to have even worse remarks made about FBs. Although I do have a very nicely done sheath by Normark to accompany one of them so that I could carry it much more easily.

The posts here have been very interesting to read. Even yours Mike, you ornery coot. I would swear you need more fiber in your diet.:p

It seems many people carry there fixed blades in public. Even in the big cities. The ones I carry are hunting style knives in standard style leather sheaths. Even when I wear a pullover shirt it only covers the handle. It would be illegal for me to conceal the knife fully.

The reason that I carry fixed blade knives is that I like them better. Much lower maintenance and no pivot or lock to wear out. This is a personal preference, not a shot at folders. There are many folding knives I like very much and some that I own, but whenever I do any serious work with a knife it is with a fixed blade. That is the reason that I have to have one with me. Except when flying of course.

strange,

for years i've worn an assortment of Helle puukkos 'dangling' from my belt with no trouble. maybe they just don't realize it's a knife.

only problem i ever had was after a bar brawl (not involved) and one of the responding Deputies took exception to the Spydie Moran on my belt. he never mentioned confiscating it, but he did run my ID for warrants. really throws them off when you're smiling and cooperative.

i would love to carry a fixed blade around... not a huge one...like the size of an CRKT F4? it's really handy to take in and out because my pants sometimes are too tight to slip my knife back in and i would sometimes just leave it on the counter until i'm finished with what i'm doing... which is a reallly big no no i'm guessing. and a small fixed blade would actually be less intimidating then like the Police for small jobs especially

Why would a knife be taken away from you in public? In Canada it's perfectly legal to carry a fixed blade of any size unconcealed. Just a few hours ago I went to the mall here in North Vancouver, to HOK and WalMart specifically, with my new bowie strapped to my belt. Not a word.

More than anything I think it's the attention that I don't like. I'd hate to explain myself to every person that asked.

Too bad you weren't at the Oakridge HOK...we coulda talked!!!

i dont like to carry a fixed open carry in public in town, too many looks /questions/etc, and i carry a pistol also (have a CCW permit now since retirement) and dont need the extra attention. so when i carry a fixed blade its gen'ly in the winter w/a coat and covered up - make do w/a folder in the summer, usually, but carry a fixed upon occasion too.

when in the country/hunting/etc not a prob at all

Here is what I'm thinking...

If everyone refrains from carrying what they want to carry, even though it is legal, sooner or later it will become illegal...most probably sooner.

I carry whatever I want to carry, as long as it's legal, because I can and because I want to.
If the sheeple are telling me what to do, what does that make me? I'm not the sheep herder, I'm the sheep herded...

If more people would start carrying knives around openly, instead of worrying about getting looks from people, pretty soon they would stop getting looks, and carrying knives would be more acceptable for everyone.

I carry a small fixed blade most of the time (although for the past week I have been carrying a Gerber AR folder). Ususally it is a CRKT F4 or a small Cooper Wharncliffe. I dont think size matters (regarding knives ya perverts :p ) to people who are afraid and ignorant about knives. I know a couple of folks who carry guns on a regular basis, but if I take out my knife to use it I get the same tired old comments like "Wow, sure dont want to make you mad" or "You planning to kill somebody?". Probably the most agrivating thing is that they say it every time and act as though they are the first person who has ever said it.

I gave up long ago trying to discuss knives with those who are afraid of them. It takes to much effort for too little gain....and besides it none of thier business what I carry or why. I simply ket them judge for themselves what to think. If they see me use it for those little everyday jobs, maybe they will get a clue on thier own...or maybe not.

I have been carrying small fixed blades pretty much exclusively for several months now.

I prefer a 3" blade and people don't freak out over them especially if they are carried discretely.

I've been carrying my outdoor edge wedge (just dropped into rf pocket) or wedge II (on clip from beltloop) and leaving my folders at home lately.
I'm considering dropping more $ now on a nice Tomey necker or dayhiker or a Jensen karacci (shrunk to 6-6.5"OAL) now that I have the small FB bug.........I need a better job

Mikemck: It's not as much as the general public's opinion that I'm worried about, but more like general public's action that I'm worried about. I fear (perhaps an irrational one) that if I do carry it unconcealed they'd call the cops on me. Most of them would exercise discretion if I have a folder, but I think they would not be the same if I have a fixed blade dangling from my belt.
Also, I most likely would travel to my university. Although they don't have policies concerning blades (hence only the regular laws apply) I would not appreciate the attention of school security if someone spotted it and send them my way.
I do carry the most "carriable" FB sometimes, but not in an attention attracting manner.

Hello all. Im a California resident and I was wondering if it is legal to carry a 3 inch bladed neck knife concealed? Thanks!

Unfortunately, it is illegal to carry any fixed blade (regardless of length) concealed in CA. However, the concealment of folding knives is permitted. If you want all of the facts, check out the knife laws forum.
