Carrying My Grail Mammoth and Damascus - Crazy?

Let me add some perspective (if I may and with all due respect) to a few of the posts above: It is a knife, sure ... but an irreplaceable knife .... with incredible mammoth and a ladder blade like you don't see anymore ...

I carry a William Henry too ... I'd be mighty pissed if I lose it ... but I can eventually buy the same or something similar. Not the case here. That said ... to each their own, right?

The SS damascus is unbelievably beautiful in person, I think it was waxed. It was made in 2009 so maybe it was one that had clearcoat on it. So I won't cut with it, although I cut with my raindrop damascus plain Jane and it shows not a scratch. I'll carry it in the leather case for a while and see how it goes. I must admit the responses are surprising me.

I think you answered your own question:

"I'm old, retired, and don't need to sell knives for money. So I'd like to enjoy carrying this knife. FYI, I carry 3 of my William Henry's (really expensive ones, my 4th I'll save and sell off), and I don't even use the leather clip cases. It gives me pleasure."

My only concern is the damascus which is quite unique and perfect. Nothing like what is being offered nowadays. I would not want to blemish, scratch or fade it.

Who am I kidding ... I would never carry that beauty. I have a few that I bought for using, but my collectibles are just that. Yours definitely would fall in that category ... but each one of us is different. If it brings you joy ... I mean, how many things really do that?

I'd say you should carry it and cut stuff with it, just carry it in a slip pouch. Carry for special occasion's only maybe.

Who are you keeping it mint for, the next owner?

I see no value or satisfaction in owning if I won't wear or use it.

I'm going to think on it a while. It's not going anywhere.

You only live once, if carrying this grail mammoth damascus brings you pleasure, by all means. I have had a couple Damascus CRK and used them just like I would their S30V cousins. I used them for food prep, opening packages, cutting cardboard, whittling. And all this, I did in CRK Damascus Style....!! It holds an edge just like S30V. There is something special when your using a Damascus bladed knife.

I buy knives to use them. I do have some CRK that I have never carried and are pretty much safe queens, but its not that I am keeping them as safe queens for resale, its just that I have other CRK I am enjoying at them moment. I have been offered lots more than what I paid for them by other forum members, but they are not for sale, and for no other reason than that I just like them and enjoy looking at them and when I wish to carry them, they are there.

I have a beautiful Bocote inlay coming, if I like it, its going to be carried. Though its not on the same scale as mammoth and damascus, its still nice eye candy that many would reserve as opening envelopes and nothing more.

With it being mammoth, you will naturally be more careful with it, but that doesnt mean you cant use it like any other CRK and Enjoy It.

I'll agree with everyone who says to use it. Obviously take care of it, don't just toss it in your tackle box and take it fishing. But it's a beautiful knife that needs to be out and about, not stuck in a drawer. Drawers are for socks, not knives. :)

EDC it!!! I have EDC a mammoth for almost 2 years carrying it in the leather slip case and the knife is in extremely good condition. The only thing that shows wear are the inlays, which have decided to absorb my hand oils over time. (:

Carry it only because you want to not because you feel you have to. If you don't plain on selling it, using it only makes it yours and you'll have a story for every mark on it.

It's funny, it all depends on how old you are, if your an older gent, you tend to say F it and start using everything you buy because the future is now. If your in your 20's then I can see holding on to it for the future appreciative value.

My vote is make it yours by using your newly acquired grail and don't look back.

It's a beautiful, unique knife - congrats.
Carry it.
From my experience with a large Sebenza I can tell you mammoth is a fine handle material.
Mine rides in a pouch on my belt, the blade is S30V. First I was afraid to use it, but a certain incident changed that.
From what I understand it was made to get carried and used.
CRK says it's the top of their line and I think you can enjoy it even more if you make it an EDC.
hope this helps.

I'll carry my large Classic Sebbie, usually. My fancy inlaid Sebs are all smalls and don't fit my hand. So I don't carry them. BUT, if they were large, I surely would.
I'm not big on safe queens, unless I intend to gift it sometime to a kid or gd-kid.

I wouldn't use it. I'd keep it all nice and pretty in my safe:)

Seriously, use another knife instead. It's ok(regardless of what some think) to keep a knife just for "looking". Just because I buy an awesome annual or UG doesn't automatically force me to "use it".

Keep it nice and new...use another one. :)

I'm definitely not going to cut with it because the blade is clear coated (but SS). But I may carry it in the leather pouch when I go out.

Definitely use it. Without use it's just another really nice CRK. With use, it's YOUR really nice CRK. That knife will last forever, and when you're gone you will pass it onto someone who will appreciate it not only for the quality and construction of the knife, but they will enjoy the character that the wear gives the knife knowing that you used it.

Why even carry it if you aren't going to use it? Essentially it is still a safe queen.

To fondle and admire and show it off. I always carry a second knife - a small William Henry - that i use to cut stuff. Sounds weird but is true.

It's built to take much more than you can throw at it - use it and enjoy it. This one has barely left my pocket since it arrived, and rested comfortably in the previous owner's pocket for several years before finding its way to me.
