Carrying swords around California universities

If so, then why do I see so many people carrying swords around campus? I did it myself when I was a student at UC San Diego when i carried by katana with me around campus.

When were you there, and why were you hauling around a katana?

If Erik Tracy Sensei or Scott Chang Sensei were teaching you, I must point out to them that they were remiss in taking on students who will cut trees with katana...patent disrespect for the sword.

What else is there to cut other than trees? I wanted to see what the sword could handle. If I wanted to cut straw mats I could just use a kitchen knife for that.
