Carson tech boiling aka real steel megladon. Anyone?

The Benchmade MPR has the same feature on the lock bar; kinda wacky if you ask me. I had three of em though with no issues so... ;):D:thumbup:

Huh, that's interesting, and those don't even have a steel insert!

Do you have a 4-leaf clover in your pocket or something?:D

Lol, honestly i think i have you to thank. They probably considered the situation with you and figured its worth it to them to give me the expedited shipping rather than risk losing another. At the time i ordered i dont think your knife turned up yet. So thanks again. Jesus man i never thought i would be thanking you so much.

Mine came in today. But since pics are all ready in the thread I didnt bother to take any as its identical except mine doesnt have any marks on the handle. I must say out of the well, zip lock bag (????) this thing is impressive. Like the knife bluesbender posted I am not concerned about lock wear as I physically cannot push the lockbar over any amount that I can even notice. It just doesnt budge. The detent is perfect. And it is probably one of the smoothest knives I have every owned. I do wish the lockbar cutout wasnt so deep but I dont see it causing any issues and its just a personal preference. And it is something I can overlook given the very nice build otherwise. I really do like how they incorporated off the shelf hardware in a way that gives the impression that its custom but these screws dont look like they were manufactured specifically for the knife but rather used high quality hardware store parts. Blade centering is perfect and I love the idea of a genuine sealed bearing system. I think the coolest touch is the very small lockup surface. Since many manufacturers feel that the best lockup is a small amount of surface to surface contact I never really understood why makers who feel this way would make the lockbar and the lockface so wide if it is only going to make contact with a small portion of the blade tang. Overall I am very impressed. And at this point it looks to NOT be a catch and release.

Can you tell me what sort of grind is on the boiling? I've been trying to find out what kind of grind it has but all I can really find is that it has a "thick grind."

It is a full flat grind. The thickest part of the blade spine is 0.138". Or 3.5 millimeters. The thickness at the edge is 0.025" or about .65 millimeters. The things you are reading about a "thick" gind is because the taper is very minor until about the last inch where you can see it get much more aggressive. I like it because there is more mass towards the tip than usual. Once that detent breaks its gonna open all the way as that mass helps keep the blade moving. If you are thinking of getting one i would do it soon. As it seems this company sorta seems to have disapeared. Their main webpage hasnt been updated in quite awhile. It seems the brand has popped up again under the name real steel but most designs seem to have been simplified. And the prices seem to be higher as well. It would be a shame if they were gone all ready. It is hands down the highest quality knife i have EVER seen come out of china. And i have had lots of higher end chinese knives. If i had to compare the build to anything I have encountered i would put these with the best production knives made. Its that good. I normally dont buy backups anymore but this one is seriously tempting. The only thing that has stopped me is that the knife is so solid i dont anticipate it ever needing replacement.

One thing of note is that some people are saying these have ceramic bearings. The detent is ceramic but the pivot bearings are not. I couldnt resist and i swapped them out for grade 5 ceramic bearings. It is fast, smooth and silent.

Great write up purple, I'm glad yours is treating you well. They really are miles ahead in terms of quality for the price they ask, I've been considering a backup myself.

For $200, I truly don't think there are better flippers out there.

How does it move in and out of the pocket with the clip sitting in the lock bar relief like that?

Not bad, they do give a little bit of "resistance" sometimes, but since all the edges are pretty smooth and rounded, it slips in and out pretty easily. The clip actually sits more towards the flat part of the handle, rather than directly on the cutout.

Thanks for the answer. If I could I'd go and buy one immediately. I just got into carrying a high end knife a week ago, and after a lot of shopping around I picked up a ZT0808. Literally the next day I found out that the boiler is a thing... So now I gotta save up. I'm just hoping I can do it before they disappear.

That is a bit of an optical illusion. I see what you are talking about but half of one side of the clip is actually out of the cutout and right up against he frame. When i got mi e i increased the tension on te clip because i felt it came out a little too easy. I dont get any hang ups. Its funny. I absolutely hate the look of this clip but it works really well. Such is my battle with all clips. I either like the look and hate the way it works or i love how it works yet despise the aesthetics.

Well the good news is you still got a great knife.

Cool. It's a great looking knife. I've been eyeing them pretty hard. Reminds me of shirogorov before shirogorov went and got ridiculously pricey.

Yeah the blade shape is very shiro like especially with the aggressive plunge grind. Some i feel will hold that against the knife. I know me and you havent exactly been seeing things eye to eye lately but i do think you would like this knife given the conversations we have had. My only criticism when considering you as a potential buyer is i would put this in the edc category. I would not call it a hard use knife. But even with its slim design its incredibly solid. I like to think of it like a love child between a shirogorov and a sebenza while getting a little carried away between the sheets. In a really good way though. Its the only chinese knife i have that i think many would actually not believe it to be if they held it. Its just on another level.

So - how does the knife perform? How is the edge holding, sharpening, etc? :) It looks really nice (though I wish the Griffin was still available)

The griffin is available you just need to know where to look. I sent you an email yet never heard back. The boil works great. The edge is really toothy but it slices great even push cuts great. Sharpening I have no idea because I simply strop my blades and havent had to hit it with a stone. Its a very thin and long knife but also very sturdy and solid lockup. Still my favorite flipper though I may be moving on from them.

I apologize if something went wrong with the email communication. I just checked my email and did not find one from you (only one from Blues Bender). As a matter of fact I did find one Griffin on that 'express' site, but only the small one.

Thanks for the feedback about the knife. Sounds interesting, actuall. I have a Southard Tolk in the mail (well, it will be som 2-3 weeks before I get it) and should it bot be what I am looking for I may give the Megalodon a try. But there are quite a few options :)

I had mine for about 6 month now, it still hold up great!
I decided to give it a custom anodizing job, before you guys scream and riot:

-Yes i know i did a terrible job of matching the colors on the two halves.
-I was aware that anodizing a piece of titanium with stainless press-fitted in it is a bad idea.
-if i get tiered of the color i'll probably just strip it and do it over.

Here it goes:
