I was rummaging through a drawer last night and dug up a Case I picked up a few years ago at a lost & found auction.

Sorry, I don't have a digital camera.

It has 2 blades, carbon, 1 clip and one spey, both about 3 and 7/16" The closed length is about 4 and 7/16. The scales seem to be faux jigged bone.

It has nickel-silver liners.

There are 3 small dots below USA on the clip blade.

The spey is stamped "6275 SP."

Any info on approximate age or the model name would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

It sounds like a "Moose" pattern, although I think the "Moose" was 4 1/4"....
Does the shield have a circle around Case?....or not?

Bill

The shield does have a circle around the "Case."

My measurements could be off a bit.

I should add that there's a cutout in the scale to make the thumb notch on the spey blade more easily accessible.

OK then,
If all else is "right" with the knife, it sounds like a 1977 "Moose" pattern. I believe the scales ARE bone. I don't think the delrin scales have the circle around the Case logo after 1974. I found most of this information in both Price's book and in the Ritchie and Stewart Guide.

Others may have further input, or a correction, but that's a start... :)

You can't always count on the circle around Case on the shield to indicate Bone scales especially on Seventies dotted knives. I've seen a lot a Delrin handled knives with the circle, and it cost me once :barf:

Edited because I didn't see the after 1974 part...can't verify that, but I do know the one I bought by accident was a nine dot... so it sounds right :footinmou

Thanks very much for the info. I really can't tell for sure what the scale material is -- it just looks like plastic to me. I think it is plastic mainly because the brown color is so uniform. I have a few knives that are bone-handled, and they all show some variation in color. I could be wrong. :o

KeithAM,
You MAY be correct about the scales. The knife could've been rehandled....it could've had the shield replaced....it could be a "transition" knife of some kind. Or, it could be the much darker brown/black bone, instead of the reddish bone of that time and earlier.
Lots of possibilities. You might try posting a picture here or at the CASE forum at knifeforums, for additional help.

Good luck,

Bill

El Lobo,

I carefully reexamined it last night, and then compared it to pictures of similar vintage bone handled Case knives at CollectorKnives.Net and I'm now inclined to agree with you and think it's bone. It's a very very dark brown. But under a strong light I can see a couple of places where the dye didn't take quite as well as on the rest.

Thanks for your help.
