hey , i just bought a case american workman series trapper , i have looked at these for some time and have seen where is says "as ground blades" , does anyone know what this means and how they would differ from other case made blades? , tried to call case , but got a voice mail - any help would be nice , thanks - marc

yeah , i thought it was something like that but its kind of strange to see it in a description - thats why i was wondering - i had one of the sodbusters from this series also , and it did not look any different than a regular sodbuster (the blade, i mean) - so i kind of was wondering , but thanks - marc

Yeah the whole Sodbuster line has an as-ground blade to the best of my knowledge but the American Workman series features as-ground blades on other models as well, which would have polished blades in most iterations. :)

As noted, the "as-ground" blades are not polished (including, spine and tang edges somewhat rounded in the process) the way standard Case blades are.

Sometimes, you'll find as-ground blades on knives not in the Workman line, like this Case Select Peanut:

Here's an over-done image that exaggerates everything(!), including polished vs. as-ground blades (the Peanut's in the middle):

I prefer satin to the (over)polished look and feel of most Case blades, so this As-Ground Peanut works out well for me. :)

Hope this helps.

As-ground looks great and would be my choice.
All the Tony Bose collaborations I can remember have had the as-ground finish.

Sweet looking Peanut, Sarah. I don't think I've seen that one before.

they should do more in this finish. looks much better, IMO. and in my experience, when a satin type finish begins to patina, like CV steel inevitably will, it looks nice. Whereas the first patina on polished blades always just looks kind of dirty and greasy to my eyes.

Thanks! I bought it for the blue, as any normal person would; the as-ground blades were a pleasant surprise. The as-ground factor almost makes up for the the blades' being stainless instead of CV.

Almost. ;)
