Case Back Pocket concern

With my continuing quest for traditionals that I can open and handle, I recently acquired a Case Back Pocket from a great forum member. This knife is getting me even closer to what I need in a knife - the size is great for me to handle as I am finding in the larger bodies. I can move the blade just fine except for one concern - the nail nick is partially concealed into the handle scale.

I did a forum search and this seems to be the norm. I really want this knife to work for me, so I was wondering if I would send it in to Case if there is anything they could do to adjust this. Any thoughts?

dunno, maybe super glue in a thin piece of shim material where the kick hits the back spring might do the trick?

The only way to possibly adjust this, that I know of, is to peen the kick. I would not attempt this myself , but would recommend it be sent to Case, or at least someone who has some experience repairing knives. I doubt that the knife came from the Factory this way. IMHO, the Kick has either been ground down or worn down in some manner. If the kick has been filed or ground down that would, of course, void the Warranty.
I have a NIB Case Backpocket, CV Blade Yellow Handles in my Sales Stock. It's nail nick and blade sit up were they are supposed to be. The entire nail nick clears the frame by at least 1/8 of an inch. The nail nick sitting below the frame is NOT the norm.
I would return the knife to the seller for a REFUND.

I guess I should have included pics of the blade in my post. The knife looks new, unused, and never sharpened. I'm no expert by far, but looking at these pics looks like the blade has never been touched.

We'll need to see the kick and blade closed showing the problem to decide if the kick has been filed down.

Ooops, sorry, missed the pics showing the issue. A pic of the kick will tell the tale.

Regards

The red circled area below is the kick.

Break off a piece of toothpick about 3/8" long, oil it lightly and put it on the blade well under the kick, then close the blade on it,
pushing it down toward the backspring. It should leave the nick nicely exposed and will stay put.

Learning as I go here - don't know what the kick is, but will gladly take a pic once I figure out what it is.

I tried a sliver of cardboard as suggested - works good enough for now - thanks for that.

hmmm...my BP's nail nick is totally exposed and I'm able to get to it very easily.

How bout taking it to a belt sander and grind away at the handle/liner profile to you get the clearance you want.

Stan - I think your options are:

1. use something to prop up the kick.
2. track down a knife opener and use it.
3. return for refund or warranty work.

OK - Thanks Jeff (black mamba) for showing me what the kick is - here's a pic of mine:

I'm going to try the toothpick under the kick now.

Thanks for showing my your pic rayban - gives me a guide for what it should look like.

No belt sander or any tool or ability to modify the handle or liner myself.

markpmc - going to try Jeff's suggestion with the toothpick under the kick. As far as a knife opener, I find the thought of using one just wrong - I shouldn't need a tool to open a tool......I would happily send it off to Case if I thought they could do something with it - that is my first and best option in my eyes.

I did some research on this last night, and read a couple places that said there was a batch from Case that was like this but was corrected in subsequent runs. That's why rayban's blade sits normally I am thinking.

I know that that is not the proper fix but evidently it has been used by many as a fix. I can't tell you how many old knives I've purchased that upon taking a close look at it when getting it home and cleaning it there is a piece of matchstick or cardboard under the blade or kick.

I've had good luck with "peening" the kick of some knives by using a flat-tipped punch.

I know you've said your hands are weak but can't you get enough purchase higher up on the blade above the nick to pinch it open.

Whatever the outcome, good luck with your knife.

Whatever you try that knife is still beautiful

I agree and why I don't mind working with it a little to get it just right.

Tried Jeff's idea with a piece of toothpick under the kick - sits just a slight bit proud but not enough to catch my finger on the point. Nice trick with a drop of oil to hold it in place. I'm going to use it like this for a couple days then decided if I should send it in for warranty repair or not.

Thanks for all the help everyone!

Yours looks like the factory grind and the kick has not been modified. My Back Pocket's nick sits well clear of the frame, and in fact the whole blade looks to be sitting a bit higher when closed on mine than yours.

I'd send it in to Case for warranty.

That's what I've decided to do John. Although I will be without it for 2 months or so, I would like this one to be perfect the way it should be.

In the meantime it was a fun learning experience today - this is one reason I got into this hobby as it is something I can do and learn while stuck in my chair most of the day.

Here is the result from the toothpick mod:

yep, a little shim helps, you might want to use that keen edge of that very knife to slim down that wood shim ;) just to help bring that tip down a hair more, getting snagged is NO fun at all...

I thought the same Gary - I also did try the narrower end of the same toothpick but that wasn't enough. I thought I would leave it as is for a couple days as I figure it may settle a little and be just right. I can rub my finger from the end of the knife along over the tip and it doesn't catch - might be different if/when I sharpen the point.

It's not perfect - that's why I am going to send it off to Case.

Good idea, fingers crossed for you sir, that she comes back like new! or they send you a solid replacement as well. I liked that the edge bevels looked pretty even, looks like she came in pretty sharp for you too?

Here is my recent new case pocket carry like yours.... sharing the pic so you can compare nail nick location when closed. Yours seems to be a bit lower, but maybe within specs... but I don't know.
