Case Blade Rub

The dominant place I buy such things as Case or Queen traditionals is one particular store which is about 2 hours from me. (So it is not like dropping by the local hardware store.) I try to drop by if I am in the neighborhood and I do jobs in that area from time to time. So I bunch up purchases. I see Queen at shows a lot and usually buy there from them.

Regarding Case, here's two more considerations. They have purposefully positioned the Case brand as a collectable product. At their current quality level, there is nothing collectable about them regarding the true attributes of a knife, walk and talk, fit and finish, etc. Sure you can collect colors and logo'd blades, like kids would collect baseball cards or hot wheels cars. The other thing is that Buck produces a similarly priced knife, made in the USA, that doesn't rub. Walk and talk, fit and finish could be better but are acceptable. Case has gotten lazy.

I had a 2hr conversation with the head of QC about a month ago.. I voiced my displeasure on blade rub, liner gaps, blades not centered.. He stated to me that CASEs stance on this is that these issues were of no concern to them.. As long as the blades do not hit liners/other blades as to disrupt opening/closing its ok.. They can touch a little and its ok in their eyes.. So they aint gonna step up their QC any time soon.. We discussed a lot more and after this I will NEVER buy a CASE without eye ballin it first.. NO Mail purchases for me..

Quite a revealing post about Case. Rub is okay. Blade centering is of no concern. It also hints at company problems in terms of profitability and we know what that means for the future.

Rough Riders have better quality control it seems. Now you can understand the significance of the Case rep looking at and buying a bunch of Rough Rider slip joints. I was told he said something to the effect of "How can you produce knives this good and sell for prices like this?"

Added: Every time I look at this post, it seems words are changing?

a couple of months ago I ordered a sodbuster, had horrible blade rub, sent it back for an exchange and the replacement was even worse, blade rubbed and the backspring was proud. I can deal with off center blades but rubbing I would rather not have.

Yes this. I'm pretty easy to please on knife looks but the blade rub actively messes with the knife grind which I don't appreciate. The result more me is a knife that's just constantly not that sharp.

I have not edited my post since I posted it..:) John
I was referring to my own post. I write it out and hit post. Then I take a look at it again and I see stuff changed... words I did not use. Maybe it is some sort of spell check thing built into the forum software or maybe I am just not paying attention.

I have not experienced all the issues you have Jmh with Case, but I have experienced enough that I pretty much won't buy anymore unless I handle the knife. That usually means I fondle a couple of the same pattern in a store. Yeah. I pay a little more. Case just isn't a priority brand for me anymore, so they certainly won't feel my lack of business.

I know this is an old thread, but whatever. I’ve sent a Case Trapperlock back twice for blade run and blade “rock” front to back. They’ve had it twice and I just got it back with the blade rub unsolved

In my experience, I get more case knives that are delivered with major issues than those that aren't, so I went ahead and bought a case from 2012, looks like a peanut. Its made so different that you'd think it came from an entirely new company; thicker blades, swedge, stronger tips, not mirror polish, SS, etc.
also try to care a little bit about posting in old threads, especially 6 years old, it's frowned upon

Thanks for the reply. The last two I bought where a samba

I appreciate the response! Everything I have, except the trapperlock , has been acceptable. I’ve got a Sambra Stag 1998 medium stockman. I’m interested to see that one. All in, I’d say Case’s service center sucks
