Case/Bose Lannys Clip: anything somewhat comparable at a lower cost?

John Lloyd will make you a knife cheaper than the Case/Bose stuff. I'll bet Joe Allen will too. Both would be better, and you can spec it your way.

Something about those blades doesn't say Lanny's anymore to me. I think it's the shorter clip (I like them to be over 50% of the blade length) and the full flat grind. I'm hard to please :P

Here's the characteristics that make the Lanny's Clip so appealing to me, as enumerated in my Lanny's Clip thread:

I don't understand, why the gentle curve in the handle is it supposed to allow for a great blade to handle ratio?
I may be actually missing something (old news LOL), but when i want optimize that ratio all the work it's in the pivot placement and the tang design, the handle's drop being not relevant.

You know, I probably could have given you an answer when I wrote that list, but now that you mention it, I may have been wrong. It's been known to happen. On my Lanny's the tip sits just below the end, meaning that without that drop, the blade would have to sit deeper in the frame when closed, which would give it a different profile. I think that's what I was talking about, but you're right, that has nothing to do with blade length to handle length ratio. More to do with blade position when closed.

Right. I included those pics to show that GEC has moved and changed the nail nick and swedges on the same blade. If (when?) they make their version of the LC, which I agree with your criteria, I wouldn't be surprised to see it start as #7411XX.

The Case/Bose Zulu Spear is a good alternative. :)

Yes, and for the reason you stated it also allow for the nice belly in the blade, preventing the edge slamming on the spring.

Since it is a Tony Bose pattern, do you think they should?

Because it is a Tony Bose pattern and not one made 100 years ago by a dozen different makers, GEC should get permission from Tony first. AFAIK, most of the custom makers who make LCs have received permission from Tony and he even help them (at least a few) to make their own versions of the LC.

And given Tony's deal with Case, I doubt he'd be willing/able to give permission to another maker.

Which brings us back to the first few suggestions, save up and buy the collaboration LC if that's the one the OP wants :) I always figured that the collaboration LC can be had for less than a custom even from a maker that doesn't charge much as long as you like the bone options or get lucky and find one of the ebony ones.

I don't see where GEC really competes head-to-head against Case, other than with the high-end collaborations. GEC puts out such a small volume compared to Case (even compared to the Bose/Case Collabs), that I would think a compromise could be worked out. All in my opinion, of course. I'd buy a GEC LC in a heartbeat.

That being said, I do think the 2012 BF Traditional posted above looks an awful lot like the LC in profile. Love that modified version with just the clip blade!

Hmmm. Good point. Nothing keeping Case from making a regular production run is there? Maybe cut cost by using a CV blade?
