Case/Bose Whittler

I just got my Case/Bose Whittler back from the case repair center. I don't know what they did, but the problem is still there. I sent a detailed note on what was wrong. The knife is unusable. For a $400.00 knife with the Tony Bose name on it I expected more. The two small blades still jiggle up and down. Plus the bone scale is now cracked under the middle pin on the pen-blade side. What a mess.:(

I mean they either they didn't even open the blades or they sent me another bad one with an additional prize of a cracked scale. They did oil the blades though.

Kodiak, amazing, a $400 knife with both Case and Bose names on it, with major problems and Case won't fix it ! you must feel quite angry and disappointed. i was watching ebay for one of these whittlers, but not now, as the chances of it having bad springs or loose blades is too high.
how about sending the knife to Mr. Bose? i bet he would fix it. he too must be pissed off that Case screwed up his knives and then put his name on them. Bose stands for top quality, not shoddy workmanship. roland

The issue with quality control is with Case, not Tony Bose, and it is Case's responsibility to make it right. (This is not to say that Tony wouldn't be put off by the situation or offer his assistance.)

The springs on my own example are not perfect but not anything approaching Kodiak's description.

kodiak,

This is totally unacceptable and I would state such to the customer service department and if they were unresponsive, proceed to work my way up the chain. I was more than pleased with my experience and stated this to the customer service rep. I hope this will be resolved, because this is one great pattern in my opinion. I was so impressed with this pattern I commissioned a custom one to be built.

Best of luck,
James

Thank you guys for listening to me vent. I'm a little better now. I received a e-mail back from Mary, Cases Repair Administrator. They expressed their sincerest apologies and offered to send a prepaid UPS box to me to ship it back. She would then give it directly to Mr. Yonkers, head of the Quality Control Department. It's all I can do so I'll go with that. Wish me luck!:D

It's been somewhat of a quagmire but it sounds like you might be getting close to a solution. Keep us informed how this all works out but I am confident Case will take care of this shituation.

I have handled the "real McCoy" and own a Case/Bose Whittler and, although it is a very well made knife, the spring strength doesn't compare to what Tony makes. I wish everyone could handle one of these. Tony sure wouldn't be happy with a whimpy spring.

Well, I finally recieved a box back from Case with a nice note. The note said

"Please find enclosed a replacement for the 2005 limited edition Tony Bose locking whittler you sent in for repairs. I apologize for the condition of the knife you first recieved and hope you find its replacement to be in satisfactory working order. A knife in the condition of the one you sent us should have never been placed in finished goods and shipped to a customer."

The knife they sent me is perfect and will be my EDC for years to come! I'm glad I stayed with it. All I wanted was a folder with a locking blade and a couple of extra blades. I love the grinds on these blades. Lets talk about this knife!

Kodiak,

Now that is what I call a solution to a problem.
BTW are you sure you know exactly how to evaluate a repair job, I would be more than happy to assist you, just drop that in the mail and I will give it a top notch eval, now you realize this may take a year or 10:D

Ditto on what's been said and glad to hear you are a happy customer now. Great lookin knife!

Thanks guys! I really am happy with my new tool. The stag on this knife is beautiful. It has very deep lines and is a nice deep color too. The springs on the two small blades have good snap. At first, the lock on the main blade was very hard to release. After some oil, cleaning, and two days of use it became a lot smoother! It's really nice but..... I may have to get culpeppj's address and send it to him for a full analysis. Even if it dose take 10 years. :D

How does the locking spring work for the main blade? I understand the two pins hold the two small springs...but where does the main blade spring receive its' tension? Thanks

The spring hooks down under the lock bar and there is a double load on the spring. That's what the 2 pins in the middle do. You can take the front blade out of the knife and the back 2 blades will still walk and talk. It is a very difficult knife to make, you guys should tip your had to Case. Most of the cost of these knives goes to EDM wire cutting to get the accuracy required, they are not a standard production item.

I'm glad to hear all got sorted out, I was thinking about a CASE/BOSE Dog-Leg Jack but took fright on hearing of build-faults on a 400 dollar knife! Anybody have experience of this model?

I have all but two of the Tony Bose/Case collaboration knives and those two are in the mail heading in this direction..I have not had a single problem on any of these knives and have bragged to anyone who will listen  that I have yet to own a better made production knife...Bar none..

Here are a few examples of the Dog Leg Jack that I have enjoyed..Honestly no problems at all and I can't say that about the Schatt & Morgans, Queens, Eye Brand, Case, Weidmansheil, Bulldog, Fight'N Roosters I have owned..

I bought one, I recieved one, I am about to cry. It is one beautiful knife. I played with the main blade and just fell in love with it. Then I opened the two small blades. They both jiggle up and down alot. Their is no pressure from the springs on either blade when they are open. the two small blades have absaluty have zero walk and talk. I am crushed. I contacted the seller and ask them if each knife did that. I hope it's a bad seed and I can get a good one.

I am sure case will take care of the problem. I got one and it was absolutely perfect.
