Well, I was in the Case factory this week for a tour and I saw them doing it with an induction annealing machine. I do not know just how far up into the tang the annealing process affects.

Good to know. That takes care of point 1. But not 2 & 3. The Cases both tested as if they were that soft. And AG does say on his website that the TS hardness is in that range.
I do gotta say that those Case knives are nicely built. All edges are rounded and polished up pretty. And they are REALLY easy to sharpen, which would be another suggestion that the hardness figure is correct.
me2, that reading on the Buck shocked me silly. They claim a hardness range of 57-59 IIRC, so the reading I got is within the realm of possibility.

Sure are pretty knives. I've a family friend who's son is about ready for a pocket knife. I think that trapper is going to find a special home. I'll have to ask my friend if I can do that.
