Case "Dark Red" Bone

If CASE were to offer that type of bone as seen on your Trapper, they would not be able to meet demand. FANTASTIC:thumbup::thumbup::thumbup:

I'd really like to find one of those as a Barehead Slimline Trapper single blade, but I'm not sure if they ever did those in Redbone? Delrin yes, endcapped yes and 2 blades.

Regards, Will

Good looking knife! If the color of the Copperlock I got would've looked like that, I would've kept it. That being said… I still wouldn't call that "dark red" bone.

It's not my idea of dark red either. It's just red. Thankfully, it's not pink.

This is an example of what RR calls dark red jigged bone. And while it doesn't have the brownish overtones of Case's 60s-ish red bone, it's still preferable to their newer stuff, and definitely DARK.

Thanks guys,

I picked that knife up off the bay, and it looked horrible.
Had like a tree sap type film on it (all yellow), but with a little brazo and polish paper it cleaned up fine.
Looked brand new, someone bought it and put it in a draw and let it set OVER 45 years? And NOT use it once.
It's truly in mint condition, and I do love it!:)

PS. have another old one I'll try and post later.

Barrett, this knife looked just like yours when I first got it. I used Fiebings dye to darken it.

The best advice I could ever give you for a new Case knife is buy it in person or from a place that shows actual pictures .................... or you could find an old 1970's or before redbone which I imagine might delight you. :)

what he said : ) Every time I see one of Primble's pics, I get envious, then sad that Case doesn't produce such fine deep red scales any more.

I recall reading somewhere that a lot of the old XX Case knives that ended up as dark red or dark green were in fact intended to be dark brown, but the old dyes were not stable. I sure don't remember seeing any pink (or bright red or lime green) on a work site back in the late 70's or early 80's. I do recall dark browns, dark reds, dark greens and on the really well used knives of the really old guys some dark burnt orange. Just saying.

Case bone colors seem much weaker than they used to. I ordered a chestnut bone peanut and an autumn orange peanut. Neither knife looked like the picture. The orange looked more like a reddish yellow. The chestnut looked more like caramel.
I've learned the hard way that stock photos are very misleading. They use the best colors for the pics. You stand a better chance of getting what you want with a used knife. The photos are usually of the actual knife, not a stock photo.
