Case hardening colors

I would like to produce some case hardening colors on some bolsters. Seems to me i remember something about bone meal being used but just a comment. I'm not looking for information on case hardening. I'm familiar with this. Thanks.

Fram what I understand, for your application, you can just use a torch and play with the colors unless you are actually looking to case harden the bolsters.
 
Bone to carbon ratio effects colors, sheilds and other devices being used to try and control color formation etc. Particle size of materials used can also effect patterns, sort of like copper patina with ammonia and wood, shape of wood effects patterns, stringy bark way different than fine sawdust or chips.
 
Does the quench from case hardening have a lot to do with the colors?
