Case is laying off.

Hmm, let's see... According to the article, they laid off 31 workers in January, or "almost 30%" of the workforce. That means they must have started with around 100 workers and went down to about 70. Now they want to lay off 78 more?

Needless to say I'm not impressed with the Post-Gazette reporting. I wonder what the real numbers are, only with them can one tell the real scope of the layoff news.

Either way, I don't wish to make light of it. The idea that Case might be in trouble is very unsettling.

"Case has reduced its workforce by almost 30 percent since January, when the company laid off 31 workers."

I think that what they meant was that with the 78 recent layoffs, they were at a 30% total workforce reduction now. Still very sad. :( I'll be buying a few over the next few days.

I am sure we'll see more knife companies getting in financial troubles this year. My impression is that even the top brands will feel the negative effects of the economy anytime soon.

Sure, the top end knife market has been extremely good for some brands (Busse, Strider, CR, Fällkniven, Bark River etc.), but if your potential customers get laid off by thousands every day, there'll be fewer people to pay for the knives in the end.

-Actually, this was reported by the Associated Press.

This is such a terrible thing to see. Not that it makes much difference, but the people at Case are just great folks. I hate to hear that Case has been affected by the economic crisis. Hopefully things will turn around soon, and Case can get back to a packed house.

Yikes! I hope they'll be able to keep things going ok. They're my favorite traditional manufacturer, and they seemed to have actually kicked things up a notch this year...I wonder how this will affect them.

That is sad news. 42, I agree that quality is up a notch higher for 2009. Fit and finish better and the ones I have handled have better edges. We have added about 50 new SKU's from Case this year bringing us up to over 900 SKU's. Lots of choices in their line-up. But as noted, sales are soft. That said, I think by the fall we will see that most do not lose their jobs and the money folks are saving-up will be turned loose in celebration of the up-turn.
Let's hope.

Very good point, I like your optimism. You think like I do on this matter.
