case knife pattern 18 question

Ok, I've decided I need a case stock man, and after looking at all the likely places, the one that I like best seems to be the 6318 pattern. So I'm trying to refine my search, and I've noticed some variation in knives with the same pattern number. What I particularly like is the California clip blade, but this pattern also shows up with the standard clip, it seems. And there also seems to be quite a bit of variation among California clips. What I particularly like is when the spine very closely follows the contour of the handle when it's closed. Some seem to be more angular, while some are more rounded. What I actually want is a stock man with a main blade like the old u.h. 897, but in carbon steel, preferably with a natural handle material. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Check out the Amber Bone 6318. They come with cv or stainless blades so be sure and order one with cv blades.

Jim

Besides the Amber Bone, Case also makes the yellow handle version with the california clip and CV steel.

I've got the 6318cv in yellow, and its a great knife. I never worry about not having enough knife with this in my pocket.

I'm not sure if this is the profile you're describing but, if so, you may have to go vintage to find what you're looking for. These are all HE models (pen blades instead of speys) and the 6318 & 3318 are both early seventies versions.

Sadly the red one has moved on :( and I can't find an open pic (it was a little slimmer - closer to what you're describing I think) but here's one of the yeller one. Hope this helps.

ETA: Here's one from '79 that I forgot I had...:o

I wonder if the blade profiles might just come down to luck of the draw?

Yes, those top two are what I'm talking about. That red one is particularly beautiful. Thanks for the tip. So if there isn't a current case equivalent, does anybody know of another make that would be similar?

Maybe take a look at the Utica KutMaster Catskill (although the only personal experience I have is one with delrin covers they produced for Moore Maker - decent quality for the price)

ETA: Here it is.

I've only seen the bone/bolstered versions in pics.

You might want to ask over in the traditional forum - maybe have better luck over there (you can even request a mod move this thread by clicking on the exclamation mark in the triangle button)

Moved per your request.

Rough Rider makes a large selection of handle materials in this pattern. Here is a popular one in Armor Hide bone with stainless steel.

I bought the 6318 in Harvest Orange, pocketworn. A flawless knife, and the Turkish clip blade is really nice.

Ok, I went to the case website and could not find a turkish clip mentioned. Although that would be probably exactly what I want. Can you tell where you found it, or how? Was the dealer a blade forums supporter?

They might not call it a Turkish clip. I bought it in a big Bass fishing store. I'm sure KSF or one of our supporters has them.

The long or turkish clip is pretty much standard with the 18 pattern. Last year I did order a PocketWorn Red bone 6318 and it came with thesame standard clip as on my Case Texas Jack, but I do like it.

Here is a newly purchased punch stockman (3318pu), which is identical to the 3318, other than the punch being substituted for the usual spey blade. The clip blade runs quite close to the handle. My clip on my newly purchased 3318 looks exactly the same as this one. Beautifully made knives.

I have an Amber bone 6318pu that i love. Dont underestimate the value of the punch. Beats a spey blade, IMO

I have since rubbed a satin finish on the blades. This knife opens smooth as glass like I expect from Case. Their stainless has a little blue in it when you take the glare off.

That's my 6318.

I just ordered a Utica big pine premium stockman. The shape looks good to me, and I like the carbon steel springs. I think I'm going to keep looking for a vintage case specimen, but maybe the Utica can tide me over. Oh my, it really is a sickness.

Is the punch stainless on those?

Nice! Let us know what you think when you receive it - I'm thinking of ordering one of the Catskills I mentioned.
