Case knife quality issues, and testing out the warranty

Sadly, I wouldn't buy another Case at this point, unless it was vintage and I had a chance to inspect it. Especially when I can find far more consistent QC and attention to detail from some comparably-priced competing brands.

I have had no worse luck with new Case knives than any other brand and actually, I have better luck with Case than with Queen. The "Queen Wobble" seems to be epidemic.

what other comparably prices brands do you think are more consistent?

I only have one "true Queen" (and several Queen-made S&Ms & Northwoods) - and while it didn't come sharp, it has zero wobble, great f&f and D2 steel. But I've certainly heard that before about Queen. Guess I just got lucky. In fact, that Queen has better construction than my two Queen-made S&Ms, imo.

As far as having "no worse luck with Case than any other brand," I'd say that there are a number of other manufacturers whose QC is a lot more consistent than Case can claim to be these days. Generally, they're also more expensive, but...

Any US companies?

Depends on what type of folder you're looking for, but I'd say yes. The Farm and Field line from GEC, US-made Bucks, Queen (in my experience).... But as Willgoy said, while not US-made, Boker German-made knives are generally far better for the money than a comparably priced Case, in my experience. I'd happily spend $50 on an unseen Boker Tree. I wouldn't make that mistake again with an unseen Case.

But to each his own, and I figured this would be a deeply unpopular opinion...:D

Well, a couple days ago I received a postcard from Case saying they received the knife and that it will be 6-8 weeks. Kind of disappointed I haven't gotten it yet. However, I did get the leatherman back already and they sent me a brand new one.

ithaca49, hang in there buddy. I think that postcard is the one that they send out to everyone. I have on several occasions sent a knife into case for repair and got the same postcard. On each occasion I recieved the knife less than one week after I got the postcard. I think, and I could be wrong, that they say 6 to 8 weeks just to give them extra time if they need it. Also, each knife that I got back was perfect. I have enough confidence in them that I am getting ready to send two 64 to 69 era stockmans to them for repair. If I had any reservations about them at all I would not send these two knives. The most important thing to remember, when sending a knife to them, is to include a detailed letter stating what the problem is and what you want them to do about it. This has just been my exp. and YMMV

Have a great day,
Jeff

Once, I received the post card the day after my knife came home.

Today I received the knife back from Case. Overall, I'm happy with the replacement. The backspring still does not fit perfectly flush with the blade when the blade is extended, however it is significantly less than before. The tip is also fully contained in the handles. It looks like they just gave me a new one too since it came in a new box.

> The backspring still does not fit perfectly flush with the blade when the blade is extended,

I had to send a Slimline Trapper back 3 times to solve that problem.
Post a photo please. Then we can all tell you to send it back again until they get it right..

I have no real experience to bring to this thread other than to say about five months ago I was looking hard at the Case Trapperlock and Mid Hunter as traditional styled knives with a thumb stud and pocket clip.

I was real close to ordering one, but everything I read about Case's spotty QC and questionable steel quality kept me away. They may have great customer service - and by all accounts they do - but what good is that if I have to keep sending in knives that aren't up to snuff to begin with?

(Still looking for a traditionally styled knife with a thumb stud and pocket clip, for the record...)

I'm kind of of new to collecting traditionals, but I carried a Schrade - Uncle Henry Brown Bear for thirty-five years as my only folder. Lost the first one after about eight years (Left it on the bumper of my truck at the landfill and drove off. When I came back to look for it a few minutes later, the grader was already working the spot where I had been parked.)) and immediately replaced it. Carried the new one for about twenty-seven years and lost it too (Laid it down at work after use and somebody got back to it before I did.). That sent me on a search for a new pocket knife. As a result, I now have over fifty knives, among which are some Cases.
The second and third knives I bought from Case were a yellow CV Trapperlock and a Canoe, from the same vendor. The Trapperlock had terrible blade play in both directions and the lock was all the way against the mark side liner when open. The Canoe blades were rubbing against each other and had major scuffing. They were sent to Case for warranty work. Got them back in just over two weeks, probably in better condition than if I had selected them from a dealer's stock after personal inspection. I am impressed with Case's warranty performance.
The reason I mention this is that the Trapperlock was worth the wait. As smooth opening and as solid a lockup as my Gayle Bradley, and a beautiful blend of Traditional and Modern.
