Case knives are now calling to me

My sickness is stretching its boundaries. I have been bitten by the Case bug. And just when I thought my knife obsession was dying down a bit, too. Given the affordability of the Case brand, I figure it could be worse. :D

I have been staying in Ooltewah, Tennessee for the past 3 days visiting my elderly parents. I have managed to make two trips to the Frost Cutlery showroom, which has a pretty decent selection of current production Case knives, and their prices are good. I was like a kid in a candy store. I picked up an American Workman SS Mini Copperlock first and then went back the next day to get a CV Slimline Trapper with the yellow handle. I like them both a lot.

If I'm going to give in to my obsession, and since I make regular trips to Ooltewah, what other Case knives should I consider for general use?

It's hard to resist the call from Case.

You definitely gotta get a stockman (my favorite pattern). Or a dozen or so. Case has a multitude of sizes and handles to choose from in the stockman pattern. And you gotta get a trapper. And, of course, a sod buster. And....

I got a bad case of Case-itis last year myself. There are so many interesting patterns, handles options, and of course gotta have them in both steels. It's easy to both become overwhelmed by choices and to go overboard on the purchases.

Here are a few to consider. Filter these through your personal preferences for # of blades, steel type, handle options.

- Peanut. A great little 2-blade serpentine jack. Other options in this size range are the Tiny Trapper and Small Stockman (2 patterns).

- Pen Knife in Yellow Delrin CV. A very useful pattern, frequently overlooked. It shares the same frame ('087) as their Medium Jack and one of the smaller Medium Stockman patterns. Another similar option is the Mini Copperhead, which is a little smaller but has options with a Wharncliffe main.

- Mini Trapper. Available in several blade configurations, handles, steels. I like both the standard clip+long spey, as well as the clip+Wharncliffe. You can also find it in a couple of single-blade options.

- Small Texas Jack. One of my favorites. Squared bolster serpentine. Same handle is used for the '032 Medium Stockman, which is also one of my favorites.

- Medium Stockman. Unless you really dislike 3-blade knives, then a '18 or '032 pattern Medium Stockman should be at the top of your list. For me, the Case 63032 Medium Stockman in Chestnut Bone CV is what immediately comes to mind when I think of what a traditional knife looks like.

- One of the Tony Bose designed jack knives: Teardrop Jack that just came out, or the Sway Back Jack / Gent that has been out for a few years. The Sway Back series are a little pricier than the average Case knife, though.

There are tons of choices and I didn't mention any of the larger patterns, but those are just some of my personal favorites / recommendations.

Since a lot Case Knives are actually made by Frost in Tennesee you should be able to pick up some bargains!

Rma100,where are you getting your information on where case knives are made?

Really?????????? That's interesting Bob. Can you tell us which knives/patterns Case has Frost make. I would think some of the replica advertising knives and the like but would like your input if possible. Thanks.

I never knew that!!
Which ones, Bob??
Are they made on site?
Are the parts imported?
What is the whole story????

Re: Case/Frost

This has been hashed out in other places before. The only verifiable fact that has ever come out is that some knives have been/are assembled by Frost to aid in keeping up with demand. The parts are made in Bradford, PA...not one of other counties that is frequently claimed. IIRC, the main knife involved is the yellow delrin Trapper. There may be others, I don't know nor will I blindly speculate as many others are prone to do.

Verified by who (or is it whom?)? How about a link.

Sorry, I do not have a link, nor can I recall which of the several knife related forums I frequent it was on.

This has come up in other places, usually as what appears to be a pot stirring mechanism. A lot of people out there like to dump on Case. I guess being the big dog comes with a target on your back. Until I see proof positive of such claims I will continue to view them as pure rumor, hogswallop, and/or troll fodder. Hey, if it's on the internet, it must be true.

It's all quite tiring.

In response to the OP....

I'm partial to the single blade wharncliffe "mini trapper" (6107W). I highly recommend it.

Since you are in a position to see many models first hand, check out all the ones that catch your eye (and a few that don't) and see which ones fit your needs and desires.

Thanks for your reply. Never say never they say but it's something I had not heard before. Maybe rma100 can shed some light on this if he replies.
