Case laser engraved scales...

Is it just me? I don't understand taking a perfectly good smooth bone scale (or other material) and laser engraving tree rings or spider webs or pine cone or whatever. All of that stuff just ruins an otherwise nice knife.

Maybe it's just me. I think if they want to do that kind of stuff they need to make some "modern" designs to mess with and leave our traditionals alone.

Nothing wrong with new materials, the "rough jigged black synthetic" handles look interesting.

Ed

P.S. - Don't get me started or I'll tell you how I really feel about this.

Agreed. The laser engraving stuff Case does is pretty lame. I won't buy any of it. Although the pattern stuff they have coming out in November is a bit more tasteful (the greek key and hexx patterns).

Thankfully, they still make plenty of great stuff without the laser engraving. Personally, I vote with my wallet. However, if selling laser-engraved knives helps Case stay in business, then that's a good thing!

I agree whole-heartedly with you, Ed. Just a couple of days ago I was looking through the Case lineup, on their site and some big, well-known Case retailers ..... looking for natural, or colored, smooth bone handles. I found a very limited number of them, but was appalled at all the gaudy, showy, "let's slap something on" stuff. It's like they can't stand to see a smooth surface without putting something, anything on it.

Regarding your "P.S." - this is as good a place as any to tell us how you really feel! ;)

I love Case.

There, having now said that, I wish they would tone down the collector 'Beenie baby of the knife world' thing. Some of the stuff they have come out with has been a real turn off to me, anyways.

I don't know if they have marketing people researching the customer base or what, but I can't help but wonder if they are hurting themselves doing this kind of stuff.

Carl.

I guess if the engraving is deep enough to improve grip, this could be an interesting evolution of jigging. But I guess I'm not really a fan of jigging anyway.

I agree that the world can do without "Dale Jr." and "Elvis", laser engraved, "commemorative" knives. To be fair, it is worth noting that a lot of the particularly obnoxious laser-engraved stuff Case makes is SFOs- they're just making what somebody else has ordered. Shepherd Hills is a noteworthy offender in this respect, with their obscene "bubba gum polka dot" trash etc.

I suspect that Zippo's ownership of Case may have something to do with all of the multi-branding stuff Case does. Zippo does a TON of cheesy commemorative/ borderline tacky things with their lighters. By comparison, Case is tastefully restrained.

I love Case too. As long as they stay in business, and continue to make great knives, I don't care if they make bright pink My-Little-Pony trappers or Twilight commemorative canoes with glitter scales. :barf:

 Blasphemy! I don't know if you're allowed to like traditional knives and not like jigging. I think there may be a rule against that. :D

+1  it could always be worse.

OMG!   Those Zippos must really be bad!

Need I say more?

Let's please leave the lighters and their images out of the discussion...(and I agree, they are hideous, so it makes the decision easier.)

I have a all "tactical" friend in Canada and I'm trying to get him into traditional knives, well he looked and found the one he liked best. I told him send me a link. I almost lost it when I seen it. Case trapper with spider webs and spiders on it. Maybe he should stay tactical!

I agree that they are just not for me, but evidently somebody likes em, cause they make a metric ton of em!

I have a Large Copperlock in something called Rattlesnake Bone. Don't know if this is lazer etched or not, but, it's odd, very odd...

Clearly CASE makes a good deal of money from these kind of ventures though. Some breed of collectors must have one of every issue ,however bizarre or vulgar.

Well, at least I feel better now that I know I'm not alone.

Andy, I hope those are not your lighters.

Actually, knowing Zippo owns Case explains a lot.

Ok...in the spirit of being totally honest I must admit that what got me first looking at traditionals was a case knife in a catalog with that barbwire etching. I DID NOT BUY IT...but it did draw me in and got me buying all kinds of quality slip joints without any tacky pictures on them. Although once again I must be honest...I am a sucker for anything patriotic and I am fighting the urge to buy that trapper that says freedom on it! lol

I am in the beginning phases of buying case knives and I am glad that all of you have been my guides in a way. I have to say though, I have never even considered the laser engraved bone patterns. I am with the rest of you on this one. They just look tacky.

To Case: More Chrome Vanadium please:cool::thumbup:.

That sums it up for me. ;). Just wanted to add that if they are selling, more power to them. It would be good to have Case around for at least another hundred years or so and if those knives help ...
Plus there is always the chance that someone who may not be introduced to slipjoints any other way other than via a silly handle material might get sucked into our abyss.

whatever keeps them up and running, as long as they offer combos that knife nuts can collect and use, somebody must be buying though... i saw quite a few things in that catalog that got me excited so i will take the good with the bad!
More importantly they are vaulting the seahorse! and i dont have one yet, need to get on that!
cheers

I think it's a bit of each to their own. I prefer plain.
It's nothing new for makers to produce tourist or novelty gift knife. Opinel has their lightly carved handle model & just about fluro coloured handles.
I think if selling some tacky knives helps keep a company afloat, to be able to produce the plain user versions in the states & not off shore. I say sell away.
Yep the irony is not lost on me I don't live in the states but prototect it why you've got it, we have nothing like case here.
