Case laser engraved scales...

Ok...in the spirit of being totally honest I must admit that what got me first looking at traditionals was a case knife in a catalog with that barbwire etching. I DID NOT BUY IT...but it did draw me in and got me buying all kinds of quality slip joints without any tacky pictures on them. Although once again I must be honest...I am a sucker for anything patriotic and I am fighting the urge to buy that trapper that says freedom on it! lol

Even though it looks like most of us who have posted here don't go in for the etching, pictures, writing etc. on our blades or scales (myself included), I'll betcha darn near every one of us would tell you that if you find something you like along those lines, "Go for it"!!! ;)

I agree on most of them, but for some reason I like this one.

They arre not all bad. They had the fishing series fishing toothpicks. I thought the War Series would move some people. Also the Dog and Horse series.

The patterns for the sake of patterns, eg. paisley, tiger, zebra etc, are a bit much for me.

I have a Zebra wharncliffe Copperlock and a Zebra Cheetah. I think they are quite interesting.

But I concede the point that they have taken it too far.

Is it just me? I don't understand taking a perfectly good smooth bone scale (or other material) and laser engraving tree rings or spider webs or pine cone or whatever. All of that stuff just ruins an otherwise nice knife.

I'm with you on the tree rings and spider webs etc. But I do really like the laser "brand" on the new sambar stag cv line as shown here. Hopefully I'm not on the minority.

That is very different from the situation with hearts and pine burr, tree rings, spider webs. I don't have a problem with what they did on that knife. My real frustration with their program was messing up nice handle materials like smooth bone or MOP and covering it up with a laser etched pattern, especially the MOP.

If they want to do that kind of thing as a scrimshaw-like approach, use a white or ivory micarta or bleached bone and I would be good with that as well. Some of the photo knives are okay like the war series. I can take those or leave them, but I don't dislike them.

I very much like the stag knife you posted a photo of and I'd like to have one of those too. Alas, I want one of the backpocket knives first.

joe-bob, I tried to snipe one of those zebra wharncliffe copperlocks, but got outbid. I wasn't wild about the zebra handle, but I love that Wharncliffe.

Ed, I agree with you! I don't like all the silly looking handles or blade etching either. Just give me the plain ole traditional stuff and I'll be happy !!

That one is actually kind of cool. It sort of reminds me of printed circuit board. Hmmm, maybe Case can recycle some old boards and use them for scales on the new "Cyber Trapper" and "Cyber Stockman".

To me laser etching veers away from the traditional jigging. It's just unappealing to me.Too precise to be on a tool that has flowing lines. I'm not crazy for the Duke and Elvis one's either. It just kind of cheapens them for me.

I actually have a couple Chinese knives with old circuit boards used for the scales. That stuff is tough, it makes a fairly decent handle material. It's sort of like G11- it looks cool! I don't know if I'd buy a Case with those scales, but I bet some folks would.

That's good to know. I was sort of joking because circuit boards for scales would definitely not be considered traditional however cool they might look. Now jigged circuit boards ... :p

I was having a nice day when this thread ruined it.

My dream knife was a Bubba-gum, polka-dot, laser etched Elvis Pirate Peanut...in Damascus...with a free Brooks & Dunn track

Now I feel ashamed for wanting it :(

:) If it keeps them in business all the more power too them

I wish they offered more in wood handles (or micarta or G10). Bone just doesn't appeal to me but I guess they make enough variations already.

Tom:

Sorry that I ruined your day with this thread. I want you to post pictures of that knife when you get it. Don't let me and my tastes deter you and your tastes.

Stelth:

I'm all in for some nice wood scales, I really like ebony, bocate, zebrawood, walnut, and maple. Oh, and I forgot about that California buckeye burl that Todd has on my "grail" knife.

Looks like some of the outfits that do dental teeth could come up with some decent looking faux ivory for knife scales. I know some of the natural materials can get scarce, but dyed cow bone has always been a good knife handle material. And there has to be some more unusual natural materials out there to use. Not much going on with bamboo, but it is a nice looking material when done properly.

Anyway, I'm not saying that all laser engraving is bad. I actually have one mini copperlock with Thanksgiving etch that I can take or leave and I saw a blue bone Christmas Humpback that I would consider, most just because of the meaning behind the holidays. But, even they don't "thrill" me. I bought the mini copperlock to "save" my MOP for my collection. It's a good knife with nice caramel bone that you can't really appreciate the bone because the etch obscures it. It is still a nice knife - a user, not a looker in my mind.

If any of you has a problem with the Johnny Cash knives, I'll fight you. And I once shot a man in Reno just to watch him die.

Yeah you're tough but admit it: When you hear that lonely whistle, you hang your head and cry!

X2 on the wood, and a nice linen micarta would yellow up nice over age.
Ebony, ebony ,ebony
