Case Mariner

Wow u guys are awesome i suspect the xx's are hidden in the bolster as the lack of the oval around the shield must mean it's 70 or later no ?

No, the XXs wouldn't be hidden, at least in almost all cases. The dots might very well be hidden. The oval around the word Case was more or less done away with in 1974 and was called/named the composition shield.

Notice I said above - "....... in almost all cases." and "........more or less". That is because, that in this world of knives, almost nothing is written in stone.

I have a 1970 version which still has the oval around the 'CASE' mark on the shield, so at least some of the 1970s knives will still show that. As ED mentioned, you may still have some hidden dots underneath the 'U.S.A.' mark on yours, if it's a '70s-vintage knife; or no dots at all, if it's a '65-'69 model. Here are examples of Case's 1970s stamps (the '65-'69 stamp would look the same, but without any 'dots' under the 'U.S.A.' mark):

There wouldn't be any other XXs on your blade's tang at all, aside from the clearly-seen 'CASE XX' stamp in your posted picture. The older 1940-'64 version that cilohaefink posted has a different tang stamp, with 'CASE' on the top line, and the 'XX' stamped underneath it on the 2nd line. On those examples, the 'XX' mark could/would likely be at least partly obscured (can see this in the pic cilohaefink posted, which appears to show even the top line 'CASE' mark being partly obscured).
