Case Peanut or Case Small Texas Jack?

Which one do you prefer? The Small Texas Jack is a little bigger than the peanut but is there a reason why you Case Peanut owners like the Peanut over the small Texas Jack?

Don't like the Peanut or the STJ feels better to you?

That sums up my feelings regarding the two knives. I've tried to like the Peanut due to others' devotion to the same (and I do like jacks), but for me it feels too small in the wrong ways, and thick for its length.

On the other hand, I consider the Small Texas Jack a quintessentially fine knife, a decent handle-full of blade (including the strong, substantial pen secondary) in a relatively slim-carrying presentation.

If pocket space is an issue, a Peanut is fine. If you're looking for a main knife (even for just a day!), the Small Texas Jack would be my vote.

(Full disclosure: I own a Peanut, but purposefully gave away the only Texas Jack I've had [briefly] in my possession in a "Do Unto Others" giveaway; it's a knife I'd feel confident giving to anyone without knowing their preferences off-hand. Not that they'd ultimately consider it as fine as I do, but-- it's just such a solid design.)

the only thing with the STJ is the CV patterns are limited.

Right, although Peanuts in CV are hardly prevalent (although they do come in chestnut bone, which I like very much).

Oddly enough for now, the STJ comes in amber bone with CV (a classic Case combination, in my book), while amber bone Peanuts are available in stainless steel only (at least, last I looked). I do like Case's amber bone....

Any chance you can find both knives to look at in person?

With respect to the Peanut, I'd also go with the Not-So-Small Texas Jack. I frequently feel guilty about not carrying it more because it's a great knife

For me, it's the peanut. I prefer the more-comfortable-in-pocket rounded bolsters vs. the square bolsters on the jack. And if you compare them side to side, the peanut's main blade ain't that much smaller than the jack. Both are great knives, though.

Well I'm definitely a peanut fan almost 2 years of everyday carry, here's another Case jack that seems to get over looked, the '87, same shape as the mighty peanut rounded bolsters and all, just a bit bigger.

I'm with you Pete; I carried this 22087 around Miami Beach for the last four days; you get a lot of blade for such a compact knife. It fits well in the hand and wears well in a pair of shorts. I don't care much for pen knives of any configuration as an EDC (but I do collect them) - this working grade Case is just the right size. OH

Interesting thread which is very informative for me. Never had the small Texas Jack so cannot comment on that, but I do have a Case Peanut. Truth be told, I have never felt confident carrying the Peanut as my main knife because it does not seem to be enough. Having read the cult of the peanut thread, I do feel like I am missing out on something and attribute it to my own shortcomings and not the knife. Maybe I am still somewhat stuck in the tactical mindset but that's another story. Looks like I need to try this Texas jack though.

Seems like the amber bone is the best selection for the small Texas Jack CV and certainly looks nice but it might be a tad too big for the pocket. I can see it turning sideways unless I put it in a pocket sheath which I won't.

I choose option 3...

The Baby Butterbean.

Roughly the same size as the peanut, but feels better in my hand.

...then again, I am biased because I hate the muskrat style skinny clip blade on the stockman and peanut. I don't mind it in a wider profile like a barlow.

Butterbean is a nice little knife. Consider it.

It probably has to do with the way I carry my traditional knives. I carry vertically in my back pocket beside my wallet. As such, something that is approximately the length of the wallet works well. The 3 1/2" to 3 3/4" closed length range is about ideal for that.

A smaller knife like the Peanut tends to slide down to the bottom of my pocket under the wallet more easily. Also the STJ feels like "enough" knife without being too big. I dunno, it just feels right. I have a couple of Peanuts but they never get any pocket carry. The only reason I ever carry anything other than the Small Texas Jack is because it makes me feel stupid to have bought so many knives and only carry the same one every day.

You just made things alot more complicated throwing the Case Buttermean into the mix.:p

The Butterbean in Honeycomb with the little golden shield is a beautiful knife, that picture doesnt do it justice.

I was deciding between a peanut and a butterbean last weekend, had them both in my hands and chose the butterbean. (Christmas Gift)

I know people are almost RELIGIOUS about their Peanuts on this board, but the Butterbean just feels better to me. They are almost identical in size and weight, and I prefer the blades on the butterbean. I am a sucker for long pulls... and it has them on both blades :D

Here is the little butterbean I purchased last weekend as a Christmas gift for my wife, hence the purple. She was getting jealous of all the knives Ive been buying and her spyderco is all 'old hat' now.

Another vote for the 22087.

I have one just like the one Old Hunter has pictured. A little bigger than the Case Peanut, but not as big as the Texas Jack. I just wish they offered it in CV. I sent an email to Case about that, and just got a "Thank you for buying Case knives" response. Another nice thing about the 87 Jacks is they will fit in the watch pocket of my jeans.

Butterbean is a nice pattern, I have a Kissing crane, I think they call it a small or baby canoe, nice blade ratio in it, it's carry is nice, one spring, and a nice wide blade, heck get a butterbean and a peanut, this way you have a bean and a legume and a complete protein.
