Case peanut or Medium stockman 6318

I meant you don't have to remove your gloves to open it. It's not an important criteria when working with cardboard, but it is something worth mentioning i believe.
(english is not my first language, so please excuse my choice of words :D , didn't intend to sound 'tactical' )

I own both. I never carry the Peanut. I have a 6318 in my pocket right now and used it earlier today cutting some pallet shrink wrap, strapping, cardboard, and packing tape on some boxes. Worked like a charm.

Between those two, a 6318 for me. I also like the 63032 version of the Case medium stockman.

It's all about size versus function. The Peanut is a fine knife. But the way I carry mine, vertically in my back pocket beside my wallet, a longer knife works better. A Peanut would fall down to the bottom more easily. So I prefer something in the 3 1/2" to 3 3/4" range. I also like the versatility in the blade types better. I really prefer the regular clip in the '032 over the California clip in the '18, but the rounded bolsters of the '18 make for a slightly more comfortable carry.

Here's the one I usually carry, and that I am carrying now. Pocket Worn Harvest Orange in stainless steel.

That Pocket Worn Harvest is a very tidy handle option, got a Humpback Stockman (itself an unusual & good choice) in that same material and I like it greatly. As for the choice, I wouldn't choose Peanut over a smaller Stockman. My choice of small knife is CASE Pen, GEC Conductor or a small Laguiole for that matter. Another Med Stockman very well worth getting is the chestnut bone version with pen blade instead of spey, I can't recall the No. sorry.

Heck! I had the same problem. I solved that one by carrying both. Got the Amberbone Stockman in CV and the Chestnut in my levis right now. Seems to work for me, although I am engaged in an office/warehouse /greenhouse business. Also carrying a Backpocket in CV in, well, my back pocket. You can't go wrong with either one, but I think the Peanut is probably more useful for day to day light duty. Best of luck in your choice and be sure to let us know how it all turns out.

Both knives are great, you will probably at some point get both, ( if you are like any of us here ) I carried larger knives for many years, large Boker stockman, Opinel #9, Gec #54 Moose, or a Moore Maker 5 blade stockman, I worked in the trades so I needed something a little bigger, now that I take care of my daughter I carry a peanut everyday for about two years, its great for most task that I need to do in public and around the home ( cut up fruit and other items for daughter ) but I still do carry another larger slipjoint also, so for me it's a peanut and something else. The peanuts clip blade and the Case 18 stockmans clip blade don't have a significant difference in length, but if it's going to be your only knife or introduction into slipjoints a stockman is a fantastic pattern to start with, or finish with, I got by just fine for eight years with a stockman and a Opinel everyday, but then I found this place filled with enablers and now I have more knives then I could possibly burn through in five lifetimes, the stockman is a do it all kind of knife. The 6318pu that bdev suggested is a great pattern, here are some side by side pictures for size comparison.

I did get a stockman and this christmas got a cv yellow peanut.. now I feel complete in the case department. They will rotate along with the great gift of a medium jack that is soon to arrive.

I have a Peanut in Orange Scales and carried it for one day ~~ way to small except for opening Mail.!**
Now I carry a Delica or a 6318 <<<< no it does not print in my pocket as most say but both the Spydie & Case do what I need them to do and I will probably give the Peanut away someday.! Feels like a straight Pin in my pocket ~~ it is so small and tiny - - just not for me.^^

The Peanut is very small. I carried one a few years back, after reading all the love they get. It literally disappeared in my pocket which was kinda cool. After using it for daily uses, I found it really is a good pattern, that will do most anything needed, when used correctly. That said, I have big hands and just prefer a knife that is a little bigger.
Not because they work any better, just because they feel better in hand.

The 6318 was the first pattern I really collected, when I first started. I had a fairly decent collection, starting with the XX era knives, up into the 80's production.
After I started using one, it didn't take long to figure out I really don't care for the pattern. :o

Not because it is a bad pattern, it isn't. I can't really give a reason why, just don't care for them. I next tried the 6347 pattern and loved those.
Same principle as the 18 series, but a little bigger. It just feels better in my hand, and the blades are a lot easier to get out.

I just got a peanut(6220) and a stockman(3318pu) for Christmas. Haven't carried the stockman yet but love carrying the peanut. Most likely will have both in my pocket today and in the future. Get both! You will love them!

I actually had a stockman and got a yellow cv peanut for christmas. What are your thoughts of these two knifes so far? I love both of the patterns and although I enjoy how the peanut disappears in my pocket, the sheepsfoot blade of the stockman is so hard to beat.

I like the Case peanut. I've been using it alot more than I thought. Cut through some furniture wrap like a scalpel, was out whittling a little yesterday, great for peeling apples, and basic chores. I enjoy having it in my pocket. The stockman I'm sure is solid also but I don't care for the spey blade and the clip blade on the peanut looks better to me than the stockman.

Okay so now that I have both I think I can talk about them more properly. While I love the CV stockman I keep finding that the large size sometimes is annoying in the pocket. I usually take it with me just loose in my right front pocket with a tiny e05 flashlight so it is noticeable when it goes sideways, any of you who carries one on regular basis (3 5/8 long) do you have any suggestions?

I find the peanut to be adecuate, however I love the full hand feel of the stockman. So if I could only find a good way to carry it and have it be in-obtrusive I would never look back.

So for this I will ask.. How do you guys carry yours? What else do you carry in that pocket and the others?

I am pretty minimalistic kind of guy so usually I only have:
- wallet
- car key & house key
- small flashlight (fenix e05 kind of size)
- and my knife..
- sometime a hanky floating around my pockets (specially during the snuffly winter).

I have used a peanut a little and either a 3318 or 6318 a lot. It will depend on how you use a
knife. If I just want to open a bag or cut a tag either is fine. If I am working on something for a little while or whittling the stockman is far better for me due to the larger handle. To be honest I don't notice either in my pocket.

I carry my knife in my right front pocket and clip my flashlight (Maratac AAA) to my shirt pocket next to my pen.

It really depends on what you want in the knife. I only have a Rough Rider peanut but the size is too small for many of the things I often use a knife for. It is great for carrying loose in a front pocket, you will hardly notice it. I typically carry my knives in the watch pocket or have a small pocket in my dockers that holds it which keeps a larger knife like the stockman out of the way. I never notice my stockman (or small jack) in my watch pocket so it's a mute point to me.

I often use my knives for cutting up fruits and veggies when fixing lunch and the peanut was a little too small for that to me. If you just use your knife for opening packages, pealing apples, and other occasional task I say the peanut is an fine knife. If you like to do much more than that you might find yourself wishing for more.

I would highly recommend the stockman.
