Case Peanut?

I'm looking for a small traditional folder, something classic that will last. A while back someone recommended the Case Peanut to me.
My question is, is it worth the $35-40 it goes for? That's a good chunk of money to me and I'd really hate to blow it on a poor decision.
Someone convince me on the peanut?

Definately worth it. Ive had my peanut for a few months. Ive got quite a few knives, but the peanut is always with me. Takes up very little space and does everything i ask it to. My peanut has permenant residence in my back left pocket

I am over 6', about 365 (used to be in the 420s), and have gigantic paws. I was not sold on the peanut at all but I was later amazed at it's versatility. My father carried pen knives and peanuts, although he called them pen knives at the time. You will be very amazed at how much the little tool can accomplish with a little ingenuity. I usually have a Case Tribal Spear or a custom dog leg jack with me, and the peanut is used more often. Ladies even ooh and aah over it.

Give the Rough Rider line of peanuts a try. You can get them for around ten bucks and I believe you will be pleasantly surprised.

I just picked one up the other day on a closeout. I was really impressed with the quality.
Not sure if I will carry it as much as some others because it is pretty small!
We'll see, but it shore is a looker....

Oh, and I really have been a member that long and this shows as my first post.
I dont talk much :)

Great little knife. I think its worth it. Obviously, it will depend on the intended use.

I'll second the recommendation for a Rough Rider if you're not sure about the pattern. You just might be happy with the $10 Rough Rider and decide that you don't need the Case. Good possibility anyway.

One thing to note if you do go this route: The Rough Rider Peanuts don't have half stops but the Case Peanuts do. Not a big deal but worth mentioning. Aside from that, the Rough Rider will give you a good idea if you like the pattern enough to spend a little more for the Case Peanut.

Yeah, you might want to tone it down a little on the jibber jabber. Just kidding, of course. Welcome to the forum!

I have long listed after a Peanut. Unfortunately the closest Case dealer that I am aware of is I'm Anchorage, AK, over 1100 kms away. Maybe someday... for now I will keep perusing the pawn shops and classifieds...

Wow those were some quick replies! Thank for all the input and the welcoming!
I really wanted to see it in person so I would better know what I was getting into. Fortunately I have a small case dealer near me, however their selection was limited to most only expensive models. $65+
And no peanut...
I'll look into something a little easier on the pocket, getting married in October so I really have no business blowing cash anyway ;-)

Case Peanuts are fine knives, I carry one of mine pretty frequently. As to whether they are "worth" the price is up to you.

If you are short on funds, then Rough Rider makes a good alternative. I have two smaller RR knives (not peanuts) that are good enough for my needs and were less than $10 each.

For me the handle on the peanut doesn't give me enough to hold on to. There are several other knives that are small enough that they aren't very noticeable in the pocket, but are larger than the peanut. As others have said, Rough Riders are a good way to try out the different patterns.

It just occurred to me that I have a Rough Rider Peanut in my desk at work that I never use. It's been sitting there for what seems like a decade and I've been waiting for someone to come along that I can give it to. It has red jigged bone covers and I don't recall ever cutting anything with it.

If interested, I'll send it to you free of charge if you have a U.S. shipping address. Just a friendly offer. No obligation but I'm more than happy to give it a new home.

A previous poster mentioned that he got a peanut on closeout. There is a fairly recent thread that identifies the big box hardware/home improvement chain that has them, for about half price. Satin finish stainless, navy blue jigged bone. Not what I would have picked, but at that price, I took one. My local store also has the medium stockman on closeout, at a similar price, similar finish. If I hadn't found these, I probably would have taken a Rough Rider, and may still.

I have bought several Case knives in recent months, at prices ranging from $28 to around $40. Case knives have good quality, and I feel they are generally worth the money. If I came across a Case peanut in CV, with scales that I liked, I might well spend $40 for it.

Another vote for trying a Rough Rider first, for around $10. I quite enjoy using 3⅛ to 3¼" knives, but the peanut is NOTICEABLY smaller. Rough Rider is good quality, and if you don't like it, you're only out 10 bucks.

The peanut is small, but very capable. It manages to tick a lot of boxes:

-very portable, no excuse not to have it in your pocket
-looks good, dressy enough for every occasion, not so dressy that you ever feel it's over the top
-good cutting power from a clip that's big enough to cut almost anything you need cut, while having a nice sharp point, and a pen blade that lends itself to precision
-the peanut is a well-made pattern, can be picked up from $25-40 dollars from Case, even cheaper from Rough Rider, so it is economical

The only thing that can be said against it is that for some people it feels too small. This, however, is largely a matter of personal preference and what you're used to. A peanut is seldom my well-reasoned first choice of a knife, if I know I need to cut something. But it's a perfect knife for everyday, when you may or may not need a knife, but there are surely many occasions when one might come in handy.

Can't go wrong with Case. If you can pony up the extra $20, the select line of knives is worth it.
