Case Pen or Peanut?

So, I'm going to get one of these in CV/yellow. Which one do I really want? I've read all about the 'nut here, but then I saw the Pen and was curious. Also, does the Pen have halfstops?

I've been looking at these choices myself, because I peel a lot of Chestnuts over these up coming Holidays and have been thinking about buying the Case Pen knife because the 3 1/4 frame would fit my hand better than the Case Peanut I now own.

I could be wrong, but I don't believe the Pen has half stops.

You really can't go wrong with either one. The Peanut is a bit wider and gives you a little more thumb rest but the Pen has a single spring and is very thin in the pocket.

No halfstops on the Pen. The 'nut has 'em. The penknife is longer - 3 1/4" vs 2 7/8" - but also thinner than the peanut. Also depends on if you have a preference for the blades opening on the same end or opposite ends of the knife. The peanut gets lots of "press coverage" around here - and rightfully so - but the neglected penknife is also a wonderful pattern!

The blades are about the same length on both knives. Pen knife has a slightly longer, but thinner handle. There is no "spacer" between the blades of the pen knife, as there is on the Peanut, so they can tend to rub when opening and closing. The Peanut, while shorter in the handle, feels a bit sturdier. And no, no half stops on the Pen. But, as has been said, you can't go wrong with either.

I've never tried out the Pen,but can without reservation recommend the Peanut.I have'nt done anything heavy duty with mine yet,but for the pull out and cut what needs cutting,it works for me.I also like the fact that it does'nt feel like a brick in my jeans pocket,I hardly notice it's there until needed.

Here are a couple comparison pics:

The 087 Pen is a great little knife but, all in all, I find that I prefer the Peanut over it.

Amen. Right now my only penknife, a little Buck, is AWOL, but I love her. My grandpa carried the same penknife for appx. 45 years, and died with it in his pocket. He looked at peanuts, said he liked the pen better. I have both, so I don't have to choose, but if I got rid of my pen, I would prolly be struck by lightning.

Overall, your call. :D

If you want a third option, the case slimline trapper is similar but longer than both (it only has the clip blade).

I use one, love it.

Hmm this thread might have just reminded me of a good pattern for my dad that I was having no luck with.

I knew I wanted a bit larger than the nut, for his large hands/fingers, but not larger by much because then he wouldn't carry it.

Gave him an opinel #6 a few years back and he put it through the paces. Cut a ton of sod with it, even, he can get good work with a short blade done in no time. But has never been a pocket knife guy. It was a lot sharper than the old steak knives he used for that job, though... It rusted to he'll because he didn't understand non stainless, which I fixed up in a couple minutes and taught him better :p then he snapped the tip off and lost it....

Anyways he doesn't do much of that work any more, and I completely forgot about the pen pattern this whole time and it just might be perfect. I'll opt for the SS for him, though....

I am lucky enough to have both the yellow handled CV pen knife and peanut. I have carried and used them both and for this guy the pen knife just works better. More handle equals better control and is more comfortable to use. Also while the peanut is very easy in the pocket I think the pen knife is a little better because it is so thin.
I really like peanuts to tho and you really can't go to far wrong with either one.

I just got the pen knife today with yellow handles and CV steel. I opted for it over the peanut because of the slightly larger size and thinner handle. they are both great patterns but i prefer the pen knife over the peanut.

I have a Case peanut and I just gave a Case pen knife to a friend for a gift. So I've handled both quite a bit.

I find the peanut to be a bit smaller in the hand than I prefer. I also don't care for the half-stop.

I found the pen knife to be a nice size. Small enough to be innocuous in pocket or in use. Large enough to give full control.

I prefer the Peanut:)
Thanks to Yablanowich who gifted me a yellow Case Pen knife() I could try them out both.
The Pen feels a bit awkward in my hand.
I compare it with my Opinels
The 6 feels awkward, while the no.5 fits like a glove and so does the no 7.

So the Pen is either too big or too smal for my hands.

I hope I do make sense :o:D

If I weren't late to the dance I'd have suggested/asked if you've considered the Case Eisenhower pattern. It's 3 1/8th with a spear master and pen secondary blade. Works very well for me. I was able to handle a peanut at the local farm supply story and it's just too small for my tastes. I bought my Eisenhower because of a unique scale/shield combination that appealed to me and I've been very happy with it. It currently is giving a break to my 108 OT as my watch fob pocket knife.

Unlike the Peanut, both blades on the Pen open properly with the right thumb like God intended.

Hi,

If I was choosing between the two Case patterns, I'd go for the Pen. I like the Peanut pattern, but Case's version just doesn't trip my trigger. I do like the Pen a lot though.
