Case quality still hit-or-miss

Didn't mean to pick on you, Shrapnel. The "up to par" comment triggered the post, but my comments apply to lots of folks who want perfection to be standard in a reasonably low cost production knife.

In a common production knife, I don't consider "Par" to be "perfect". Hasn't been since at least the 60's. (My experience with every day common pocket knives goes back that far.) Don't see why it should be today. But, as collectors, we tend to expect more out of a knife than the regular knife user. We berate Case because they don't meet our standards. But, IMO, our standards here on the forum are higher than those of most casual users.

Frank- maybe the blame lies with me, maybe my definition of par was different from yours, i didnt mean par as in perfection, i meant par as in the fundamentals being right. I know you use your knives, and i use my knives, and the issues that arise from everyday use is different than receiving a flawed knife from the factory. Do you see what im trying to say? I wish knives were made how they used to be, but in this day in age, everything is computer generated and machine operated and the hands-on factor dwindles. Outsourcing is a major issue, and companies have to cut some corners to stay competitive and I believe that's where the problem lies.

I find the quality to be very hit or miss. I have a lot of excellent Case knives but the majority I have gotten recently have been sloppy. Loose blades, bad grinds, high ride blades and gaps in the springs. All in all I still like them but wish the tolerances were tighter. Just MHO.

I was going to ask where the store is near Raton since I drive through once a year on my way to Tucson. Then I noticed the "show me state". It brought back some memories. I used to travel a lot on business and found myself in the music city several times from 2000 to 2006. I noticed a nearby city named Lebanon and assumed it was the one associated with the big Case knife store. I was disappointed it was a different one but then discovered another branch of that company (as well as a Gibson factory store) was right in a mall 5 miles from where I was working. Them trips got real expensive real fast! When the clerks in the store saw me coming they would just unlock the clearance case and let me cherry pick it.

I live in Raton but travel out east often for mine consulting jobs. So I pass through Lebanon, MO regularly.
