Case Slimline Trapper

I been eyeing one at a local hardware store.

Make sure you check it out before you buy! I ordered the yellow delrin/cv model online a couple months ago and it was a disaster. It was obviously new and in the box, but had a "short" blade ( others have mentioned this in the past, basically the blade could have been over a 1/4" longer and still fit perfectly), a very uneven edge, and unacceptable side to side blade play. I have had a bunch of other Case knives and they have all been very nice and great fit and finish, but I had to return the slimline trapper. Hopefully I can find one that I can check out in person, because there is no way I buy another sight unseen.

Deltaboy, I recommend this knife highly, even though I've only had it for a couple of days. I ordered mine online, but since you can handle one or at least look at one in a local store, that's a great advantage. Mine has no blade play or any other issues, so maybe I lucked out online. This is one of the better knife purchases I've made in the last year. I love this knife!

I think Case could have squeezed a little extra blade length in this knife if they wanted, without doubt. The question is, why? It's already got a blade that's plenty long enough, and if it were any longer it would probably be unwieldy. On the other hand, the handle is nice and long, so that even a guy with bigger hands can get a good grip on it, with the endcap clearing his hand. Comfortable handle, long but controllable blade.

I get what you're saying, but that was not exactly what I was saying. It seems that there is a specific problem with this model. It appears sometimes Case "makes" these blades a little short. Most examples of this knife have an acceptable length blade but some look to be noticeably shorter, straight from the factory. I don't know whether these are just "friday" knives that have been pointed out, but the one I received was a mess. I still want a Slimline Trapper from Case, but I will have to see it in person before buying.

I have a custom version of the 048 made for me for Don Hanson III ABS MS. It has a bit wider blade 3 1/2" long, forged W2 @ R62.

Ahh I see what you mean. I've seen people saying they wish the blade were a bit longer, but I took this as a criticism of the pattern as a whole. Didn't realize it was an intermittent thing. I wonder if they made a run that was a little dimensionally short and just used them anyway...

I believe that Case die cuts production blades, they all would be the same length if the same die was used. Variations could be the result of the person grinding the blades.

This was my understanding. The knife I received had such an uneven grind that it would make sense that someone messed up the tip too. Then, I guess the QC person was out that day, and Case just let everything out the door.

Jerry, yep it's pre-1965. I carried it a long time. Blade is way too soft, so I'll make a new blade for it one day.
The next one above is also an old one, but with a better blade. :)

Some of old ones didn't have the best heat treat, but that old bone sure is nice.

D deltaboy I went through several to find a nice one (brown delrin 048 in SS) with no blade droop, and no blade play. The liners have some gaps but it's a $25 knife. Makes a good all round knife, Case used to call these truck farmer's knives. Nice slicers, will do a number on a tomato.

I've had mine for ages.... in fact, it's in my pocket right now.

As a smart fellow from Mizzippi told me, if you can't get it done with that, you might as well stay on the porch.
:)

I have the same knife. I like the pattern, but the execution was not the best. Mine has a blade so off center it touches the liner on one side. Now I am not a perfectionist by any stretch, but this one is pretty bad. Sounds like there’s a lot of QC issues with this pattern.

I regard myself as a fan:cool: I have three of them, the ones above plus a Yellow D all in stainless- I prefer it as the pattern is a good food knife not unlike the French Laguiole. F&F issues? Well, no blade play, no gaps, good snap, reasonably centred blade(certainly no rub) the two above have slightly raised spring on open which does feel annoying but it's a very reasonably priced working knife, no complaints actually:thumbsup:

Thanks, Will
