Case Swayback Jack - what do you think?

Hi guys & gals!

It´s the anniversary for me and my wife today, again :)

She offered me nicely, I could look for a knife and she would buy it. I´ve been eyeballing with the Case Swayback Jack almost for a long time. I haven´t had the money or whatsoever to get it. But now I think it´s the time.

I´ve heard about the Case problems lately especially in F&F (Wobbling, off centered blades, etc etc). But as far as I remember, the Tony Bose designs are really nice and better finished than the other ones. (I´ve never had a problem with Case Knives so far, but I don´t want a warranty case of this knife.) It should last a lifetime, for me. What about the color on the bone... etc etc - I hope you know what I mean ;)

Did you guys made bad experiences with the TB62117 (Chestnut Bone CV) in the past or are they generally great made knives?

Thanks in advance!

I have a Jack and a Gent and both have good f&f. I say go for it.

Have three Swayback Jacks (CV chestnut, SS stag, SS calypso bone), and all are spot on for F&F. Backsprings are flush closed/half-stop/open, and blades are dead center closed with no wiggle open. I'd say go for it.

The TB knives are definitely better quality than the regular Cases. Heck, even the chestnut bone is better on my SBJ is better than the chestnut bone I had on my peanut and 63032 examples. And from what I've seen from pictures of others' chestnut bone knives, this doesn't seem to be the case for just myself. My favorite Case bone is the old red bone from the mid 70's and earlier, and the chestnut sorta resembles it (at least, much moreso than the so-called "dark red" they're doing now).

You're always taking a chance with Case that you might get a bad example, but that chance is far less (but not certain) with a TB model.

Thanks for the recommendations, fellows! I have already a Swayback Gent but I don´t carry it too often. Somehow the design is a little too slim in my opinion. The SBJ just seems to be great for EDC. The two bladed design might be much better in-hand. ;) Did they change their F&F in the TB-knives in the early past? I got my SBG about four years ago.

Thanks for the congratulations, Jack!

Much appreciated, fellows!

The chestnut/CV SBJ is an amazing knife. I've owned 4 and they have all been great. They have better attention to detail than most Case knives.

Happy Anniversary Andi! I've got a couple of Swayback Jacks and have only good things to say about them too.

Happi Anniversari Uncle Andi!

I think the SWJs are great looking knives, but they might be a little on the small side for me. I'd definitely want the CV ones. It does seem that these generally have the better F&F for case production knives.

To be honest, I had a Tru-sharp version in 'cayenne' bone that I was less than impressed with (poor dye job, poor alignment, etc). I would agree with all above that if you're going to get one, TB version with CV blade would be the one to get. I also agree with Woodrow that they're on the small side for my tastes. I'd like them a lot more if they were about a 1/2" - 3/4" longer.

One of the best patterns Case has ever made! I carry mine in my watch pocket almost everyday, No matter what else I carry. The bone looks
even better with pocket time. I had mine "pimped" Blades thin, swedges cut better and blades blued. Easy to sharpen and nice to cut with...imho

A great knife at a good price. I have two SBJs and one SBG. All are good with the SBJs being a bit better than the SBG of the three I own. That said, the red gent gets carried the most.

Minimalist, but a nice little blade. I'd rather have the CV, but got a very special deal on this one at the Case outlet.

I met TB while I was there and he offered his personal (EDC) creation to me to use while I was setting up. It was an amazing piece that was a bit larger version of the same design (but with amazing materials and execution). I felt lucky just to have handled it;)

Happy anniversary, Mr. and Mrs. Humppa!

I, too, can speak highly of the chestnut bone/CV SBJ.

Happy anniversary Uncle Andi.
I still haven't played with a SBJ but it sure is among the best looking of all the Case models. I'm pretty sure you won't be disappointed.

Congrats on your anniversary Andi!
I have a SS version of the SBJ and it is a great little knife, My personal opinion on the single blade vs the Jack involves the GEC Powderhorn. The two blade is perfect, and when I got the single blade Beavertail, it just felt too skinny somehow. Perhaps you will find the same with the SBJ. I think if mine was a gent, I would find it somehow too skinny. Hope this personal observation helps.
