I just ordered one. Am I going to like it?

Anyone use the damascus and have any feedback? It says carbon damascus, but any additional info would be great.

Any pics?

Thanks

Thanks Kris! I was hoping it was DT Damascus.

This is about the most excited I have been for a knife in a while!

Holy mother-of-all-knives, Batman! Case Tony Bose!!! Dog Leg Jack!!! Peach Seed Dark Molasses!!! Damascus!!! I can't wait for you to get that knife, Kevin! :D

After going to the link I found two types it could be?

High contrast or High Carbon.

A carbon steel and nickel or two carbon steels and 2% nickel.

I guess I could call Case direct?

Thanks if anyone knows for sure. Btw, does Mr. Bose tell Case what steel to use for these? Does he also give them a specific heat treat procedure or...?

Sorry for all the questions.

If it's anything like the Dark Molasses Muskrat that I just got, you'll be very happy.

The F&F on this line is amazing. I'll be waiting to hear what you find out on the damascus.

This was taken from a post Elliott (Blues) made in 2008. It's the only thing I can recall seeing on the Thomas Damascus that Case uses.

"See my correspondence (below) with Rob Thomas:

Elliott, yes the raindrop that we have provided for Case the last 3 years is a carbon steel. It is 1075/nickel mix. 1075 is a spring steel. The nickel content is only to add color to the blade and is about 5% of the total weight. Case has decided to use this because it is easy to blank and the cost is reasonable. Devin and I will be upgrading our carbon steel for 2009 to 19C5va. It is a carbon steel made specifically for cutlery, it has vanadium in it which will be a better blade steel. Thanks, Rob Thomas"

I really like the Case/Bose collabs in the Damascus. That dogelg is nice. That modified muskrat is killer.

Thanks Gevonovich! I will do my best to get decent pics for this one :)

Rob that is beautiful! Thanks for posting that. I agree if its as nice as that I will be very happy.

Thanks very much for digging that up for me Gary. I appreciate it. I want to say its not high contrast just from the looks of it but I have such little experience with damascus.

Thanks :)

Hey Kevin, you will HAVE to give us lots of photos mate...this sounds like a great knife!! 5.56's Improved Muskrat looks stunning!!

You can't do better than the Case Bose Dogleg. Its one of my all time favorites. So much so that I bought another just in case I lost my original one.
The damascus and molasses bone will just be icing on the cake. Congrats!

Thanks again guys.

The knife should be here today.

I made quite a few phone calls trying to gather this info. Case is not very helpful. I spoke with them a few times and kept getting transferred around but no one could answer. Finally I was transferred to an engineering guy that hasn't returned my call for a few days.

It makes me a little worried.

Calls to other sources lead me to believe the 1075/nickel info is the BEST case scenario. At this point I would at least like to find out if these blades are tempered back higher then the normal Case mid 50's.

I bought it to use, but I'm not going to gamble until I get some info.

Maybe Mr. Bose could you at least disclose the RC hardness Case ran this series of damascus?

Thanks and sorry for the frustration.

Congrats on your knife - I'm sure you'll love it! I have one of the older Case Peanuts with Thomas Raindrop damascus blades. I can't tell you what the RC hardness is but mine is a good user, it holds and takes an edge quite well.

Thank you guys, I do appreciate hearing experiences with some of Case's damascus :)

My thing is with this one is I bought this knife after reading another thread highly praising Bose/Case Collaborations and one of the main points was that Tony Bose works with them/advises them on the heat treat. Being the high end knife that it is marketed as I would hope the RC hardness lands in the 59-60 range.

If it is 59-60 with 1075 that would be fine for me. My GEC's that I use with 1095 @ 57-59 do well. I have plenty of knives that hold an edge better then 1095 but I consider it good enough the way GEC treats it. But just on the line of good enough. I am not trying to look down on the lower hardness knives of Case, and I really hope this Bose Collaboration is tempered back harder to meet the higher standards a knife like this should be held to. But as much as I hope, if its not then its not.

With all that said, I am trying to make a wise decisions. If its not even going to perform as well as my GEC's then I wont ever sharpen or use it. I will just keep it as safe candy.

I would be highly surprised if this knife is not near flawless. That is not really a concern. I also have no doubts that I am really going to like it. BUT, if my GEC is a better performer I can easily favor it for what it is and leave the Case as more of a piece to just admire.

I am really not trying to stir anything up, I am just trying to avoid any surprises. The main reason I stay away from Case is the low RC hardness. Thats about it and other then that I would like to carry a case knife with pride.

So I am hoping that maybe Mr. Bose himself can help me with some info on this. I really have tried and seemingly exhausted all other options.

I can't wait to see pics!

I've been sorely tempted to pickup a stag Peanut in Damascus, and it's all Jackknife's fault :D (just kidding!)

Come on Rob you're killing me. I'm trying to save up for Blade. :p
