Case Tony Bose Dog Leg Jack - Peach Seed Dark Molasses - Damascus

You can't get an accurate Rockwell test on any damascus. The 1095 cv that I have checked are up around 59 to 60 so I'm assuming to tool steel in this damascus is up there too. There is no way to check it that I know of.

Kevin I know that Carl has/had a Case damascus peanut and he seemed to be very pleased with how it held up under daily use (as far as I can recall). It sounds like this is going to be your first Case/Bose collab knife or do you already own one? If it's your first you're gonna be hard pressed to keep it out of your pocket. The dogleg collab is one my absolute favorite knives; it melts in the hand, the F&F is custom quality on mine, and that spear blade...whoah momma! I hope you enjoy it regardless my friend

A quick cell pic just to tease for now. Away from the house and camera.

This knife is way to nice not to carry. My initial impressions on build quality is close to flawless. No gaps that light comes through and no blade play. Blades center and have moderate pull. The action feels gritty but smooth at the same time? I did flush the joints.

Overall the knife is one heck of a nice design and I have already used it twice. It will be in my pocket and carried...its just too nice not to.

On to the bad, the spear blade is very uneven from sharpening. Both blades are not sharpened to the tip leaving blunted tips. They both have wire edges and need to be sharpened. Not what I was expecting at all.

More to come with better photos. There a lot to this knife.

Thanks so much Mr Bose for the answer :)

Edit to add edited cell pic. I saw it on my computer screen and realized how far off it was.

Lol. It's like we have similar taste in knives or something ;) :D Looks great man. I'd really like to hear how the damascus holds up as I'd love to add this one to my standard dogleg, which just happens to be in my pocket today

I had a peek at it on one of the dealer sites, looks gorgeous Kevin. Looking forward to the pic's.

Oops, missed second page! Looks great:)

Sam

P.S. If a patina forms presumably the Damascus pattern becomes less defined?

Thanks guys, I know a lot of you this is nothing new for, but it sure is cool for me. Probably the closest I will ever get to a real Bose.

Sam,

I don't like to guess, and I don't know for sure. With that said if it is 8% nickel and the remainder is tool steel I think the tool steel is going to get a much darker patina. I believe, and please someone correct me if I am wrong, that the pattern is brought out with an acid etch.

I need to sharpen this guy up so I can be finished with having anything to gripe about :)

Thanks again guys, all the rumors are true IMO.

BTW, the talk of these knives not having soul is rubbish IMO. This things got it and some.

Looks pretty cool to me Kevin!

Sounds like it'll hold it's distinct pattern then, looking forward to hearing some post sharpening tales, with pic's of course:)

Great looking knife. I'm very impressed with the Case/Thomas raindrop damascus I've used (unfortunately it's from Rob, rather than Devin, assuming that Case is consistent with their steel sourcing). It easily takes a very fine aggressive edge and seems to hold it about as well as CV, but I've only used mine for relatively light cutting tasks so far.

Thanks for the info Rick. I heard that about Rob/Devin. I'm hoping for better then CV but time will tell. I plan to use this one for anything but NOT just use it to test the edge. Basically as long as it doesn't let me down or there is not a drastic difference I'm not going to focus on the steel much :)

I have to say after handling and using this knife just for this little time its a real treat having the damascus. Its so dynamic and does not look the same from any angle. I didn't sharpen it yet. I just stropped away the wire edge and its okay for now.

I'm just getting aquainted with this one for now :)

I'm hoping though it may make it in my pocket for months to come.

I hate to say it but... I told you. Those Case/Bose knives are top shelf. And the dogleg competes with the Zulu for my favorite of the group. I'm just partial to doglegs though. Congrats Kevin! Go use that beauty.

Long time no see Jared! Loving the knives your making :)

I think in this case I could not be happier to hear you say that.

It is a great knife. It is my first real dog leg and I like it. The handle is very comfortable and I think it looks good too. I really like knives like sowbellies that angle the handle and blade in a combination that enhances the natural cutting motion. This one is no exception and seems to have a very perfect feel. One thing about this one is how tight and strong the construction feels. The first thing I do when I get a slipjoint to use is drop a good amount of mineral oil into the joints and drench the backsrpings. I let it sit and seep through to flush out any buffing compound/grit. This one is one of the very few that not a drop of oil seeped through the backsprings.

I would say thats even better then passing the "light through the gaps" test!

Thanks though Jared for always pushing me towards these. You were right on and some :)

Kevin,
Congrats for your new knife. It seems you like it quite alot, and knife enthusiasm is something we all love (maybe cause we're all victims of the same thing ).
This knife is quite something to me...and now I'll tell you why.
I was never a fan of damascus steel. No particular reason for it, I just prefer a plain blade. And, I would choose many other handle materials before this one. Still, there is something about this knife, the lines, the design, that makes it look absolutely great, and it doesn't surprise me at all that you find it a pleasure to handle. Guess it must be due to that guy...Tony...Tony something... :D

Nice Dogleg Kevin!! Gotta see an in-hand pic :) I love the molasses jigged bone (I have the wharncliffe trapper). I haven't used it much to honest but I've used a damascus peanut and mini trapper. They get and stay sharp and it feels like you get a micro serrated edge. It sharpens up pretty easily but can't comment on the hardness though.

Fausto,

Thanks bud. I am glad it caught your eye in some way. I don't typically go for damascus and especially not raindrop or high contrast. I always like the look of low contrast Ladder Damascus. BUT, this thing is nice. I was worried it would be a little on the feminine side, but in person it is not. It holds it's own very well :)

Speaking of new knives in your other thread, if you want to pony up on a Case/Bose Collaboration in 154cm I can now echo the words of others and highly suggest it. Assuming they are all the same build quality. I kind of wish I had a little earlier :)

Good morning Trand! Thats a great Idea. I was thinking of pics and seriously the dealer has pics that would be hard to beat quality wise. So an in hand or two might be just the right way to go to show something different :)
