case toothpick.

ill rephrase. what is surgical steel?

There's really no such animal. It's just a marketing ploy.

Generally it means some proprietary stainless steel with reasonably good attributes. (In other words, not high end stainless steel but it'll do for most tasks.)

Case's "family brands", like Case Bros, William Russell Case, and Standard knives, are authentic Cases. They just have different tang stampings and shields for collector interest. They're just like other Cases in all other respects.

Case is hardcore about protecting their trademarks. Anyone who tries to make a knife with the word "Case" in the name is going to be looking down the barrel of a lawsuit in no time flat.

Case's stainless is sometimes called "surgical stainless". It is also called "Tru Sharp". I believe it is very close to 420HC. It is a good all-around steel, and works very well for the type of knives Case makes. It is not a super steel, nor is it intended to be. It is similar to Buck's 420HC and the steel Victorinox uses.
