Read many bad things on the forum about this steel. Is it really THAT bad? I have several pocket knives in that steel.

No it isn't. It works fine for most daily light to medium cutting tasks.

That being said...I rarely buy any Case knives with Tru-sharp as I prefer Case's CV steel by a big margin.

I said I had them. I didn't say I used them. The cases are collectors pieces.I use USA Schrade Old Timers. Just a question Just a question. I thought that's what forums were for.

According to the AG Russel web site, Case runs Tru-Sharp at 54-56. That's a pretty low hardness.

I compared the edge retention of Tru-Sharp against that of Buck 420HC cutting manila rope. The Buck measured 59HRC. The Buck had quite a bit better edge retention.

That being said, I often carry a Case knife at the office for small cutting jobs, and it performs those minor cutting chores quite well. And it does sharpen up to a very fine edge with minimal effort. But if I'm expecting to do a lot of cutting, I carry a blade made of something other than Case Tru-Sharp.

Its not bad, its run of the mill. I can get it real sharp, but the edge retention is about what I would expect. It works for what it was intended, cutting stuff.

I don't like it too much. It's fine for urban EDC, especially in a small knife that will only see light use, but I find it rather disappointing for more demanding use. The only Cases I use from my collection are the CV ones, or those with good stainless blades (ATS34 and such).

It's a pity that so many cool patterns are only available in Tru-Sharp.

I have long thought that Case should upgrade their stainless, but it still works OK. Easy to sharpen and adequate to use for light tasks. The Case knives that I enjoy are typically the smaller slippies that I carry as a companion to something larger, like a BM or CR knife.

Why even bother to compare 420HC to high end and much more expensive steels such as ATS34 or 154cm. My case sodbuster cost 17 bucks! I got what I paid for, probably more. Nothing wrong with it at that price point whatsoever.

not by a longshot just not as nice as CV:) but in all honesty i have a SS sowbelly that has a held a mean edge since i got it over the holidays, been one of my edc since i got it and it dinged me, ask me how deep a SS sowbelly can cut into a fore finger
Case tru sharp is fine by me and i wouldnt avoid carrying a knife just cause its stainless... just remember opinions are like... well you know the rest.
i say try it out for yourself:)

No, its not. Most of the worst bashing of Case stainless comes from super-steel-snobs, who think anything less that latest crucible-particle-fusion-unobtainium is crap.

True, Case stainless isn't the very best knife steel (or even the very best stainless steel) you could find. It is not as tough and does not hold and edge as well as some other alternatives. Its does take a good edge and is easy to resharpen, though, and is prefectly adequate for EDC. I have a number of slipjoint knives made with Case stainless that I use regularly and I have no complaints about any of them.

My Queen sodbuster cost $20 and has a D2 blade. The question was not about cost.

The question was about the performance of Tru-Sharp, which as I stated above, has lesser edge retention than Buck 420HC.

I'm curious. What is it about Case CV steel that so many seem to like so much? Is it edge retention or ease of sharpening? Personally, I think the patinaed blades look like you'll get tetanus from them by just handling them. I'm not a fan of that look. Is there something more to them than an old-timey aesthetic?

Stelth,

the CV? It does seem to take an edge easier, but for me, it just ages along with me. It tells a story. For example, I have a yellow sodbuster that I have peeled apples for my son with. He is two now. It is the top knife below. It ages along with Luke and I. Sentimental crap some say. Just rust others say. But for me, it has meaning.

I just bought a Case 364-5 SS hunting knife and it's a really good knife. It does have the Tru-Sharp stainless and I find nothing wrong with it. The only thing I could really find anything wrong is just that the blade could be a bit bigger handle fits perfectly like it was meant for me. I know this thread is old but I just thought I would say something about it since I have and used my knife since buying it. Didn't even sharpen it yet. Don't worry, there's a lot of assholes here, I asked if a certain knife was heat treated or if anyone knew, on a Cold Steel page and I had a couple morons be rude to me and a moderator threaten to ban me, Which I really don't give a f*** because it wouldn't be a big deal, I'll still collect knives, I'll still talk about them, I'll still sell them, I'll still buy them, so there's NO WAY in Hell I would pay money on here just to be talked down to or belittled just because I asked a stupid question on a CS forum on this site! Collecting knives and acquiring knowledge on knives should bring people together in a good way, not be idiots about it! I don't have a mortage or any big bills to pay so I have quite a bit of money and I have several hundred knives and that alone brings out the Haters!!! I'll STILL DO MY THING!!!
