look guys, dont be so sensetive. i mean, this isnt Oprah ummkay. now sure, a trapper is great for "working" on , say.... whittling a toothpick. or, poking a hole in a paper bag. but i just dont find them to useful in the woods, in the garage, in the yard or anywhere in general. and by "hollywood" i simply meant they have a million little (useless) knives manufactured for mass production, only ever meant to be kept in...well, in a CASE.
its not like the old bearded brothers are still standing around hand making these things. doesnt zippo own case or sumthin anyway? :barf:
i dont really have a "favorite" brand. most of my favorite knives are customs. as far as tomahawk go, my "favorites" are probly the customs too. but i think cold steel has a great product for the money (have just as much fun throwing $30 hawks all day as i do the $200 ones). i also have a few of their throwing knives modeled after the Tru Bals, and at $30'ish also, can actually throw them and not keep them in a case. everybody with a tru bal wants $250+. they fly/stick the same. i like "tracker" style knives. i carry my damascus one alot during hunting season. if you are looking to skin bigger game, the Uluchet is a very sharp, very unique, life time guarenteed "knife". the atax may not be an "everyday work knife" but, if you have a week to kill in the woods, you can spend at least 3 of those days figuring out what all that "knife" can do. as far as lil pocket knives go, ive carried a kershaw for several years. opened more soup cans than i have wiskers on my face with that knife. (will yer case trapper do that?)
but, again.. im not sure what we would be/are "working" on. (and i dont care what they cost, i care how they WORK). sooooooo, what are you working on?
I agree, I bought a Case Slim Trapper last winter, you can't get more of a working man's knife than that.
I have a thing for old school knives at times, just as I'm sure the people that carry them do. However they ARE outdated, and Case ends up charging some pretty crazy prices for production folders with production fit and finish, regardless of materials used in the handle. They also don't seem very concerned with trying out new designs/steels. With their name behind them they could probably cater to old and new school fans alike if they tried. The truth is people buy Case because that's what they're told to buy on the experience of their forebears. My proof is that companies like Queen and GEC could be sitting under the glass right next to Case and they'll be passed over by anyone who goes on the word of others rather than doing a little research. So essentially I think he's saying people buy Case knives because everyone else buys Case knives. I don't think he's knocking traditional knives, just certain...mainstream brands.mass produced but still assembled by people and yes zippo bought and saved case when parker was sinking it like a rock, nobody's being sensitive, just looking for something a little more informative or at the very minimum not condescending, which the longer this goes on looks like youre not willin or able to provide.
would love to hear what brand an all knowing person such as yourself enjoys working with

A working man needs a knife he can open with gloves on, in some cases.

You're in luck, Case makes Russlock, TrapperLock, fixed blades.![]()
I actually buy both, because if no one gave credence to classics, everything would be Bear Grylls/Les Stroud/Gerber/SOG what have you. Case knives are pretty classy, and I'd rather see one in someone's hand than a Gerber. That being said, my preference goes to ease of access and great steel combined. You won't see me at the other end of the field with a huge tank knife though, lol.and im fine with hatin whatever one wants too, that wasnt my issue...
in regards to your observation of case, which i agree with on some points all i got to say is thankfully somebodys buying them, so they stay open and dont end up like schrade or camillus... i dont like all the handle materials but as long as they keep making the ones i use i'm good with it
nothing wrong with Queen or GEC, they also have their fans (i have both love them)
in regards to pricing GEC equals or tops case depending on the pattern, and queen has its own quirks (butter knife dull)
Lastly in a hobby that has waned a bit in recent decades i dont care what people collect or use as long as they come to our little hobby and our neck of the woods, talkin about all things sharp and pointy, keep it alive and let people know it aint weird

True enough. I do like those. Now try digging around for them in a pocket or pouch with said gloves when you need the knife right then.![]()
