Case vs GEC and why?

You can use 400 or 600 grit sandpaper and finish with a finer abrasive and/or Flitz metal polish, on a shiny bolster. I cut the paper in narrow strips and wrap it around a knife eraser block or small wooden block and follow the contour of the bolster. Don't just hand rub the spot or you'll get a flat spot. Forget any thoughts of using a Dremel type tool to save time, you will ruin your knife. ☺️ If the ding is really deep in the metal, you might just leave it alone and call it character.😊
Thanks for the info!!

Primble Primble I MIGHT have said that about Swaybacks a thousand years ago who knows? But, must've changed my mind and only the dead don't change their minds....In fact, I carry a Lloyd Stag Swayback a lot and always liked the CASE Swayback Gent as a small companion.

Regards to all, Will
My apologies Will.😇 That was Gordon that said he thought the Swayback felt upside down in the features you don't like thread. 😲
Gordon said-Will said or Will said-Gordon said, all the same to me.🤣🤣🤣
😉

I own a fair number of Case knives and have never received one that I thought was not worth the money . I also own a fair number of GECs and I feel the same about them . I feel that the GECs just feels better in the hand than Most of the Case models . I have always liked Stag since 2015, but GEC had much better Stag than Case does now . At some time in the past , Case did use some nice Stag , but things changed . I got into Barlow collecting in 2014 and found it very difficult to buy a Case Barlow and that is what caused me to even search around for Barlows and I discovered the Northfield 77s and that lead me into GEC .

I have ordered some GEC stags and been disappointed and others really pleased. If you can't see the actual knife before purchase, it is sort of a gamble with either.
Luck and more luck is what one needs ! 😊

Think about it , GEC’s business plan is actually a win win for both companies. Their products cost more, especially on the secondary market therefore driving sales of Case knives. One hand washing the other if you will

I agree Mr. Primble . Buying Stag now is pretty much a crap shoot unless you can see it .

Thus my earlier stated desire for a GEC display case at the farm store. 🎯

Yes..... most of my knives have "character"... 🤣

Why continue to buy knives you don't think are worth the money? Once burned twice shy :)

I guess I do not understand what you mean .

Harry
Well I bought a Dave Shirley made Northwoods Scagel patterned after a real Scagel. It had a thick ugly edge and significant liner-cover gaps. It was a useable and nice knife only after I had it reground as a scandi style grind.

Although Shirley had several other models patterned after real Scagels that arroused "lust in my heart" I wouldn't buy them at the ~200 price...not worth the money.

What brings you back to GEC and Case if you don't think they are worth the money?

I think if you re-read what he said a little closer, Harry said he had never received a Case or GEC that he thought was not worth the money, which I assume is why he does not understand what you mean brownshoe. 😉☺️

Just the opposite my friend . At their Price Points , I think they both are worth their costs , and I continue to buy both brands .

LOL - yeah that was me. Love the little knife, but it would so easy for me to grab it and in a moment of inattention start using it in a manner that would probably hurt more than a wee bit.

It is a looker IMHO.

As far as GEC goes, I've only been able to get one - a Northfield #12. I'd love to find a #14 TC spearpoint Barlow one day.

edit - for the Case vs GEC thing - I'm of the "get both" opinion.

I always thought the same thing about the Swayback and the Eureka jack.
The Eureka feels like an Upside-down Trapper, and my son tried to use it that way.
Now I have a two blade Eureka and Swayback and I don't have those same feelings about them.

I don't have any of the 14's either and doubt that I will unless luck prevails. You found a handsome GEC ! ☺️

I like Case for a user and GEC for something to get ripped off on by a flipper on the Exchange here. lol Seriously though, Case is my pick. GEC is overpriced and impossible to find. They make very few knives, and even fewer of the popular patterns it seems like (to keep them in high demand I suspect). Single blade GECs make good users, like my Bullnose, but multi blade ones are awful if you actually use these knives (most people don't because they are afraid to hurt resale value with patina or scratches). GEC leaves their blade tangs and swedges so dang sharp that it is awful to carry and use their multi bladed knives. I had a GEC 48 Improved Trapper that was just plain painful to use with the clip point blade because the secondary wharncliffe just cuts into your hands. Awful.
Case makes really nice knives that generally won't put you into debt and they are actually available. They have almost all of the old timey hand made charm that GEC does, but they are not collectible toys for flippers. Also, Case actually makes stainless knives, which many people like. GEC made a few stainless knives once upon a time, but that could just be a legend like Sasquatch or the Loch Ness monster lol
